JEFFERSON TWP., Montgomery County | It is a sound that's likely to cause the hair on the back of your neck to stand up.

It's an eerie howl that has been waking some residents in a rural area just south of Liberty this summer. It's turned a few heads of residents coming home late at night.

The question in everyone's mind: what is it?

Too bad it didn't offer a link to listen to the sound. I'd be inclined to agree the guy that thinks it a red fox. But until I've heard it, I can really say.

Actually, it did provide a link to the sound. Here you go: http://alt.coxnewsweb.com/daytondailynews/audio/0816woodsnoise.mp3 (http://alt.coxnewsweb.com/daytondailynews/audio/0816woodsnoise.mp3)

Sorry, guys, it was just me. I went camping and forgot to bring toilet paper, so I ended up having to use a pine cone.

When I first read about this I thought "It's got to be Valnorran." Later, I thought "Cougar, maybe young cougars." But then, "No, it has to be Valnorran."

The articles refference to the sound being similar to a red fox was completely wrong!
This (http://www.wildlifevideo.com/sounds/Fox1.wav) is what a red fox sounds like. I have no clue what the original noise is. I kind of thought it sounded like my uncle drunk at a Metallica concert. But, who knows....

That wasnt the red fox howl!! Here is the red fox howl...you can tell its farther away...it could be this strange noise. A young fox practising his howl! The recording of this strange sound seems just closer and louder and more agressive but it is simular to the fox howl from what I can tell when I play them side by side. Thats my ears figuring!! :)

You're right, that wasn't a red fox howl, it was a red fox bark.

Here's a site that has a number of red fox vocalizations:

Honestly, it doesn't sound like any of the fox calls I've heard. I'd be more inclined to say "drunk guy out in the woods just asking to get shot."

I agree. As soon as I heard it I busted out laughing!
In high school one group of guys I hung out with always partied in the woods. When it came time to meet up and it was after dark...ya can't go hollerin (not when the local cops were ALWAYS looking to bust teens drinkin in the woods), so they'd howl to eachother. Sounded alot like that audio clip.

The strain in the vocalization of the howl isn't natural of an animal that would normally howl. It's much more likely those are human vocal chords stressing to mock a howl.

with he noise in the background, to me it really sounds more like a drunk guy yelling on the beach...and people probly didnt know what it was cause really come on, when your at the beach at night you cant see 10 feet in front of you. just a drunk guy howling...imo
