Also, after the hurricane passes, one of my superiors is gathering a bunch of us from our district in Atlanta,Ga and we are all going to Louisiana to help cleanup/rebuild. I feel terrible about what is about ot happen there, but it helps knowing that I will be a part of helping them move on and caryy on with their lives in the aftermath. Blessings to all

Some of those people were trapped with no transportation to get out please keep that in mind when judging them. There are others that are elderly and some that are bed ridden for whom no transportation was provided. Those types of people should not be fined for being poor or sick etc. There are others like the woman who opened the door and had it slam nad cut her finger in half that are questionable.I do not know the reason she opened the door but the emergency officers were not able to come and take her to get medical help last I heard. She may have had a valid reason who knows.I am not there therefore I can not judge.

True. Many residents do not own a car with the easily accessed public transportation, and if one was to stay within the Quarter (ie, work and live) a lot of distances are easier walked than to cope with parking a car and the related expenses this incurs.

Here's to sending strength to the affected folks. May the death count not raise much further and may the rest of the season have mercy on us.

The Atlantic basin shows a very peaked season from August through October, with 78% of the tropical storm days, 87% of the minor hurricane days, and 96% of the major hurricane days occurring then . Maximum activity is in 'early to mid' September.

My thoughts and prayers are definitely with the people that are affected by this devastating storm... New Orleans has been a pretty big part of my life growing up because my sister lived down there for a good while. Me, my mom, my grandmother, and my brother, would visit her down there and stay for a week or so, and I loved it. If I ever went back, I don't think I'd feel the same, and I'm sure the people down there will never be the same either.
And what sucks is the hurricanes and tropical systems won't be over until about mid-November, if I'm not mistaken. They're already monitoring another out in the Atlantic. It'll be named Lee if it strenghthens enough. Let's pray it misses us this time.

Thoughts and prayers are with all of you tonight. :(
Thank you so much, Wtchy :hugz:
The worst side of any hurricane is the eastern side; down here on the southern coast, people call it the "dirty side" of the storm. Because Katrina downgraded to a Category 4 and glanced to the east, putting New Orleans to her west at the last moment before her landfall, her brunt force fell primarily on the Mississippi coast. So although New Orleans was hit very hard, it was spared the worst of the killer winds. They were terrifying to hear from my closet bunker, and my husband and I rode this one out over a hundred miles away from Katrina's landfall. We did not have a manditory evacuation in my area, although there was one due south on the beaches.
There is no doubt whatsoever that New Orleans took a devastating blow. If it had been worse, I'm afraid the Superdome roof would've blown completely. It will take many years for them to recover. Mississippi, however, took a debilitating blow and Katrina is now a storm of the ages for them, one that appears so far to be worse than Camille in 1969 -- and Camille was one of the worst storms to hit the U.S. continent in the last century. The loss of life there is frightening.
We really don't know yet how bad it is for all of them.
Where I am on the Alabama Gulf coast, somewhat inland, we're fine. Our telephone land lines and power went down yesterday, but they're already restored. I picked up a lot of debris in the yard early this morning, but that was the worst of it for us. For my area, anyway, last year's Hurricane Ivan was much worse, and we're all still rebuilding from that. But to the south of me, below the Intercoastal Canal, I don't know what's going on yet except that it flooded yesterday; and to the east of me in Mobile, this storm was much worse for them than Ivan was due to unprecedented amounts of flooding with the storm surge.
But we will be okay. I'm mostly worried for the people in Mississippi and in New Orleans. Cleaning up after these is not easy. Generally, more people lose their lives after a storm because of accidents. If you can, please find a way to give them some help. The suffering in their areas will be terrible.

The gulf coast is going to need our prayers and help for a very long time to recover from this great disaster. We lived through hurricaine Isabel 3 yrs ago. Our neighborhood had flooding of 4 ft inside homes and lots of wind damage. Families here some are just now rebuilding and raising the foundations of their homes. It ruined people financially and mentally. Also, FEMA and home owners insurance don't do as much as you think they would. Some families are still fighting with them. I can only imagine the shock and despair these people are experiencing right now.

Our local Petco doesnt take very good care of its animals...thats why I seldom shop there. I think I will take to the management about it. If the company can care about pets I think the local store manager could do more to give his animals clean cages!

I know if I lived in New Orleans and a city-wide evacuation was ordered I'd try to get the "heck out of Dodge!". Now the folks who live along the coast in Mississippi weren't expecting to catch the brunt when Katrina shifted and a lot of them were caught by suprise. Some were able to cut holes in their roofs and climb out where they could wait to be rescued. Others were lifted from windows, very tricky maneuvering. Some couldn't get out.
I don't think I have anything in the house that would cut a hole in the roof - not that I ever expect flooding like that where I live, and anyway, if the water got that high it would float my mobile home away.

I dont agree with LadyShayne. For some of them just stubborness kept them from leaving and I have to admit those people are unbeliebably stupid. But they also showed a woman on CNN who couldnt leave because her 2 children needed constant medical attention for I think a heart condition and couldnt be moved in anything but an ambulance. IT wasnt a choice for her whether to stay or not, she stayed because if she didnt her kids would have died.

Living in "tornado alley" I have seen towns with up to 50% of the buildings destroyed and much of what was left damaged, and they were able to rebuild. It takes a long, long time. I would imagine it will take even longer when the roads and highways and bridges all have to be rebuilt as well.

At exactly 8:30PM YOUR TIME this Friday, September 3rd, there will be a moment to raise positive energy to direct to these places. [/URL]
I will also be joining.
In addition to sending the healing, protection energy to the people (including the rescuers and volunteers) and animals in this area, I will also be sending energy to those that have family and friends missing in this disaster. A friend of mine's mom and sister where last heard from Sunday night in Gulfport, Miss. My friend and his father have heard no word since. I can't imagine the agony of waiting and not knowing. I don't imagine we will receive a list of survivors for a bit as we are still trying to get people to safety.
My thoughts and energies go out to those of you who are waiting to hear word...along with the survivors and rescuers.
Blessings,
Briana

Got this off another online community board and figured I'd spread the word:
At exactly 8:30PM YOUR TIME this Friday, September 3rd, there will be a moment to raise positive energy to direct to these places. 8:30 being significant in the date these people were hit the hardest. If many people in every time zone do this all over the world, a good amount of energy will be raised to hopefully help in bringing these people back to their feet and back on dry land. To join in these efforts, please join the following yahoo group. This will also give us all an idea on how many will be lending their energy to the cause.

Adding my energy to everyone else's. The devastation is heart-wrenching. I can't even imagine how horrible it must be for them. Keeping them close in my thoughts.
My mom and I have put our names on a list to go down and help if needed. The company I work for is collecting supplies to send there as well as they started a fund to raise money. I hope those people can get some relief soon.
A close friend of mine hasn't heard from her brother yet, he lived right down the street from the Superdome. She is keeping her hopes up and hopes to hear from him soon. The Red Cross said they do not have him on their list. Please keep her in your thoughts too.
