I'm really into Candle Magic, what does everyone else think?
Here are some representations/meanings of the colours ~
· White – innocence, generosity, truth, wholeness, respect, spiritual blessings, purity, healing, rest
· Light blue -- peace, harmony, joy, kindly intentions
· Dark blue – fidelity, truth, wisdom, serenity, tranquillity, devotion, loyalty
· Green – abundance, ambition, fertility, money, luck, business, steady work, good crops, success
· Yellow -- devotion, prayer, money (gold), cheerfulness, attraction, inspiration, success, action, concentration
· Red -- love, affection, passion, sex, bodily vigour, courage, energy, strength, health
· Pink -- attraction, romance, love, honour, leadership, femininity, clean living, unselfishness
· Purple -- mastery, power, ambition, control, command, dignity, idealism, independence, pride, wisdom, protection, psychic ability
· Orange – attraction, intellect, stimulation, friendship, joy, organisation, change of plans, opening the way, prophetic dreams
· Brown – animal health and healing, study, court cases, neutrality, earthiness, telepathic powers
· Black -- repulsion, remove hexes, sorrow, freedom from evil, reverse or return, protection, repel negativity, balance with white
Any more takes?

I attempted to start this very same thread- but I must have given it a poor name, because no one responded. I wrote it sort of off the top of my head, on a different board than this one, and I started editing it afterwards. *G* I have, in your honor, deleted that post, and moved it into this thread. I will use your thoughts for a base, and add my other correspondances into the mix. If you disagree with anything, let me know!·
White – innocence, generosity, truth, wholeness, respect, spiritual blessings, purity, healing, rest
(White is the master color. White light contains all colors, and gives them back, with the aid of a prism. White is transcendance, understanding, problem solving, purity, both in the victorian sense and the alchemical sense. If you can't decide what color to use, white is always appropriate! White is the color of the moon- Monday- and if you are doing a lunar ritual or prayer, such as increase, or getting rid of menstrual pains, white is the way to go. (You would also use a silver candle for Lunar matters. Silver symbolises new beginnings, so it's good to burn when you have a new baby in the house, or are just starting in college.
· Light blue -- peace, harmony, joy, kindly intentions
· Dark blue – fidelity, truth, wisdom, serenity, tranquillity, devotion, loyalty
(Blue is for serenity and emotional balance, as in "the Bluebird of Happiness" and corresponds to the throat chakra. If you need to defend yourself verbally, blue would be a good color to pick. Also, blue is for the lungs the way green is- especially against asthma. Blues and deep Violets are Jupiterian, and light them on Thursday to remember the old god. he was a happy guy- as in the word "Jovial")
· Green – abundance, ambition, fertility, money, luck, business, steady work, good crops, success
(Green is for growth, prosperity, fecundity, if you feel enclined that way, and because American bills are green... MONEY! yay, money! But primarily, green is for the prosperity that comes from having what you need, also matters relating to the lungs. Green is the color of Venus, and you can light one for her on a Friday)
· Yellow -- devotion, prayer, money (gold), cheerfulness, attraction, inspiration, success, action, concentration
(Yellow is for happiness, and... ummm, I can't REMEMBER!...also the Solar Plexus chakra on your body, and by extension it's good to use when you need to center yourself. it is also a mercurian color, so light one just because it's Wednesday.)
(Gold is the color of , well, gold. Of course. Also integrity, morality, commitment. Burn a gold candle to celebrate your anniversaries- every year! don't wait for your golden jubilee! And for joy. And for the Sun, so burn one on Sunday. )
· Red -- love, affection, passion, sex, bodily vigour, courage, energy, strength, health
(Red is for mastery of a situation, passion, and matters relating to the genitals and (of course) to the blood system. Red candles can be lit on Tuesdays, Mars' day)
· Pink -- attraction, romance, love, honour, leadership, femininity, clean living, unselfishness
· Purple -- mastery, power, ambition, control, command, dignity, idealism, independence, pride, wisdom, protection, psychic ability (Purple is the mind, metaphysics. Purple is the Pagan color of choice. It brings your mind in tune with your soul and spirit. When you are trying to learn a tough subject in college, burn purple candles. Lavender also, because it is the mixture of purple and White, which we spoke of earlier. Anyway, purple is Mercurian because he was the god of thought. Wednesday is his day. Orange, yellow and puprle look very nice together- sumptuous and elegant! )
· Orange – attraction, intellect, stimulation, friendship, joy, organisation, change of plans, opening the way, prophetic dreams
(Orange is for communication- when you need to speak with someone and you can't get in touch with them, an orange candle will nudge them to call you. Orange is the color for Murcury, the god of comunication, speed. And, of course, Orange stands for GOLD! Yay, money! Orange is also for matters relating to the lower abdomen- liver and below. and wednesday, murcury's day.)· Brown – animal health and healing, study, court cases, neutrality, earthiness, telepathic powers
· Black -- repulsion, remove hexes, sorrow, freedom from evil, reverse or return, protection, repel negativity, balance with white (Black is the shield. Black absorbs all colors and energies into itself. If you feel that something is coming your way that you can't handle, a black candle with a prayer for protection is in order. Black is the color for Saturn, and you could burn a black candle just because it's Saturday. Black is also the color of endings, and you could use it to commemorate the end of a process for yourself. )
There are your thoughts and mine intertwined. Hmm. Not bad!

Great to have you here DragonMother! :)
I loved the way you incorperated all the meanings of each colour candle with parts of the body and days of the week! And all your descriptions are very fun and rememberable ~ thank you for taking my idea further.
Candle magick is very effective and so simple! Its my favourite method, after all we have grown up on making wishes with candles (on our birthday cakes!) .
Colours for the Elements ~
Green or Brown for Earth
Blue or Purple for Water
Red or Orange for Fire
White or Silver for Air
:p Does any one know which colours represent the gods and goddesses? (trying to strike up more interest)
or the Sabbats?
or Horoscope signs (to represent you or the person you are doing the spell for).
Before you cast your spell with your candles you must cleanse them and make them your own, this is done by annointing them with oil (one that you have made up specially for the spell or one that you have bought). Dressing can be done in certain ways for repelling or attracting spells.
:p How does everyone dress their candles?

I to love candle magic, and think it is one of the most simple and effective ways of performing magic. However, it my "tradition", the colours of the elements are as follows:-
East (Air) - Yellow
South (Fire) - Red
West (Water) - Blue
North (Earth) - Green
However, I think these are minor differences and don't know how much difference is caused by being on different sides of the hemisphere. ie do directions and their meanings change? I'm sure it's the intent that matters most.
Preparation: If I don't have the appropriate colour candle to hand, I will use a white one (as already stated it contains all the colours of the spectrum). I always use a new candle.
I first cleanse my candle by wiping with "charged" water. I focus on my intent whilst doing this. Next I use an appropriate oil to anoint my candle, one that is in line with the work I am doing. I spend time on this and work from the middle to either end. systematically covering the whole candle, whilst building up an imagine of my intent. I then carefully etch on the candle, either a word or sigil that represents my intent, with my athame, and finally when I feel that both the candle and I are ready, I will set it on my altar, and light it with a match. I will then spend a little time focusing/meditating on the flame and "seeing" the desired outcome. It's then left to burn down.
I've found this to be a very successful method, and one that works really well for me.

Hi all,
Great to hear that this thread is of good interest ~ its great to put something back into the community as I too have been learning so much here recently! Alot more than Ive ever learnt form books of the net :)
Silverwitch in answer to your interesting question ~ do directions and their meanings change? In my opinion: they do and they don't because we all have different North, south, east and west's..what is your North geographically is anothers south, and ones North is hot (fire) while anothers is cold! But all in all I dont think the meanings change and yeah ~ the intent is what makes the spell powerfull and successfull :)
Great to hear about your method of preparing your candles and how you actually work the spell.
How do you charge your water?
I use two methods: one for Attracting and one for Repelling ~
I first choose a candle of the appropriate colour ~ usually go out to buy it. I always use a new candle too and nearly always let in burn down, but if I think I may need it in the future for another spell (contains the power still) I would keep it after in a box.
I place the candle on my altar in a silver holder, then choose an oil appropriate for my wish (what I think to be - what is personal to me) ~ Rose for Love, Fennel for Confidence, lavender for peace...
I then take the candle into my hands to work the dressing of the spell...
Attracting
Then If I want to draw something towards me (attract) I meditate holding the candle, then slowing and methodically rub the oil from the top to the middle of the candle in one downward stroke (never rub up and down always in one direction), then from the bottom to the middle - so that the two points join. If its a big spell I meditate for a while imagining my wish and continiuing to rub the oil in the same manner around the candle - i often rub it four times to represent the four elements, directions, quarters.
Repelling
If I want to repell something away from me I reverse this process. Meditate again, then slowly rub the oil from the middle up to the top in an upward stroke then another one again from the middle to the bottom of the candle.
As I annoint the candle I speak my intentions ~ my wish.
I like to keep this short so that I can visualise more...
"I cleanse this candle in the name of the gods and goddesses (or if I am calling a chosen goddesses her name). May it burn in strength and in Light for...... (the purpose). Let it be so, as I will so mote it be!"
After I have annointed the candle a then dab a spot of oil on my third eye and continue to visualise the outcome of the spell while inscribing it with a word that sums up my spell in the same directions as I stroked the oil on. After placing it back in its holder on my altar, I then light it with a match, staring into its scared flame. Then I let it burn down and either store the wax (carefully) for future spells or bury it has been a spell for repelling.
:P Swiriling Dressing, this is another form of dressing the oil on your candles where you stroke the oil in a spiral up or down the candle ~ does any one have any thoughts or methods on this?

I think your probably right about the directions Silvervenus. Let's face it, if magical east can be in any direction, as I am led to believe, then the actuall directions as such can't be of paramount importance. As long as all the energies are represented in some form seems to be OK.
I should have clarified my Candle Rituals. I too use different directions for 'attracting' and 'repelling' when anointing my candle. Attracting - to me, repelling - away from me.
As to "how do I charge my water", I am very fortunate that I live beside the North Atlantic Coast, on the very wild and rugged North Cornish Coast, so I have an abundant supply of fresh sea water. Consequently, it needs very little in the way of charging as it already contains the purifying natural salt.
I fill a very special bottle that I keep specifically for this purpose straight from the sea on an incoming tide. I do try to coincide it with a full moon if possible. Later, when I am ready to do a ritual or some magical working, I "put" a ray of white light through it. It then is ready for whatever use I wish to put it to, and it also becomes my symbol on my altar for the Element of Water, which in my case is West.
I also have an ancient, sacred Kieve near me, which is a wonderful place where people of all faiths have have worshiped for possibly thousands of years. The place is absolutely magical and has a crystal clear waterfall, falling into a naturally made bowl, before carrying onto the sea. It's here that I tend to hold handfastings and public candle ceremonies around the time of the Festivals. I always take the opportunity to take a little water from here as I feel it is so special, to combine with my sea water.
It does sound as if we are working along very similiar lines doesn't it.

Hmm... I can see that The Attributes of "North " and "South" might change, depending on which hemisphere you are in... But the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, every time, and that's what those attributes are based on... I can't really imagine that I would be able to flex that far!
But I have faced my altar to different directions, depending on what my work is.
*sigh* Your coastline sounds like heaven on earth, Silverwitch. I have attended circles in Big Sur, in California. The land there is almost as you discribe yours- even to the waterfall!

Think I may of got myself in a bit of a muddle here with my north and south! I totally agree DragonMother! that's why I said they do and they don't ~ I live in the North of England, but say - my friend lives just near the boarder of Scotland - she steps over the line and is in South Scotland then back over the line to the North of england - another North is someone elses south .... Im getting myself in deeper waters here!

Silverwitch ~ I too loved your decription of where you live and how you gather your scared water!
Wow - wish I lived by a water vessel, I know some day I will but for now I use my special magickal watering can!
I leave it outside over the period of the Full Moon and hope that it rains! It rains alot here! but in the summer (not that we have good ones) it can get a little tricky trying to catch the ammount I need (if I dont have any I go without and make do with extra incense and thought)
When I think Ive caught enough (over a few nights or just on the night of the full moon) I then transfer the rain water into a ornate big perfume bottle (from Morroco), I then light a silver candle beside the bottle and too imagine that there is a silver white ray going through the water, so that it is glowing! After I have visualised for a few minutes I leave the candle to burn down with the bottle.
I use this scared water for casting my circle, in spells, when im planting new seedlings, in a bath if im going out for a special night, in an oil burner if I am reading Tarot for a friend in need ~ just a few sprinkles in all cases works magick!
I take it your favourite coloured candle is Silver Silverwitch?

Ahh... It's easy to keep it all straight- Just remember that the borders are writ by man and not by the gods... LOL!
I have lived on both coasts, California and Pennsylvania. I always know where the water is, east or west. Now I live in Chicago, and the Lake is east. For the first two years I pointed towards the water and said; "west is that way!" LOL

Has anyone else got anything to say about candle colours? and what they represent to you?
With the New Moon coming up I thought we could talk about the importance (or not) of a Silver candle and what this represents to us? Does anyone have any personal New Moon/Ostara Candle spells?
Do you always light a candle (whatever colour) to give praise to the New moon?

Just to add to the confusion of directions, the sea is actually in the East from where I am!
I do love silver as a matter of fact, and as I work a lot with planetary energies, I use different coloured candles to represent the different energies.
Sun (Healing/Vitality) - Gold
Moon (Response) - Silver
Mercury (Communication) - Orange
Venus (Attraction/Harmony) - Green
Mars (Energy) - Red
Jupiter (Expansion/Opportunity) - Blue
Saturn (Limitation/Stability) - Black
Neptune (Inspiration) - Grey
Uranus (Sudden Change) - White
Pluto (Elimination) - Violet
This is much more in line with Hermetic Magick to which I am very drawn, and I find this system works very well for me.

Its so cool you use all the colours to represent all the planets.
Do you ever do a ritual involving all the planets? They all must look so beautiful when they are all lighted!
I lit a silver and a pink candle last night and said a prayer to Sekret to celebrate the New Moon cycle and also to celebrate my new love (relationship ~ Ive been seeing my first love again for the last two months and its so great!) :sunny:

Thanks for the info Silver Venus, it's really interesting and I will have to go back again when I have more time - so many interesting things, so little time!!!
Yes, I have done a ritual involving all the planets, many moons ago, when I was getting to know them and their energies. It did look incredibly spectacular, but was really heavy going as there were huge amounts of energy buzzing about - quite mind-blowing!
Just as a matter of interest, Hermetic Magic (so called "High Magic"), is of the mind. Orphic Magic (so called "Low Magic"), is of the emotions. In reality, the division is never as clear cut as this. For Magic to work effectively, Hermetic needs a little Orphic, and Orphic needs a little Hermetic. Here endeth the lesson :bigredgri By the way, so glad your relationship seems to be on the up, and your ritual sounded beautiful.

As a nurse, color therapy has always interested me. Meditating and filling yourself with color, breathing color in and out, channeling the energy of the universe through you and directing it outward with healing color are diffent uses of this modality.
Red is vibrant and alive.
Red is a heating, vitalizing, and stimulating color.
It is directly responsible for your physical vitality.
In cases where there is a lack of energy red is an exceptional color. It is effective in the treatment of anemia and cancer. It vitalizes the blood and helps to purify it.
Do not use this color when there is an inflammatory condition present or when the person is of excitable
temperament.
The color orange has often been associated with the Sun. It is necessary for health and vitality.
It influences primarily the processes of assimilation and circulation. The color helps to regulate the intake of food and is centered around the spleen. It is good for
the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, colds, and epilepsy. It is further useful for the treatment of gout, inflammation of the kidneys, gall stones, cessation of menstruation, and mental debility.
The color yellow acts as a tonic on the nerves.
It is an inspiring and mentally stimulating color.
It is good for the treatment of dyspepsia,
diabetes, flatulence, and constipation.
Clear golden yellow is one of the most powerful forces against depression and limitations of every kind.
Yellow stimulates the brain as well as exerting great therapeutic influence on the assimilative organs of the body. Yellow also stimulates the purifying action in the body for it effects the liver, gall bladder, and intestines in stimulating them and aiding in the elimination of the body wastes.
Yellow improves the texture of the
skin, heals scars, and heals other blemishes.
Green is the color of the Earth.
It is the color of harmony and balance. It has a soothing effect upon the nerves. It has a very
powerful effect on the blood supply and its distribution throughout the body.
Green is an excellent tranquilizer and is further beneficial in the treatment of heart complaints, blood pressure, and headaches.
Blue is the color of deep peace and harmony.
It acts upon the body as a powerful antiseptic.
It is excellent in the treatment of insomnia.
Blue is good in the treatment of all throat diseases and in the treatment of gall bladder attacks, jaundice, skin abrasions, cuts, burns, and rheumatism.
Indigo is the Healer for the eyes, ears, and nose.
It is excellent in the treatment of deafness, cataract, delirium tremens, and eye inflammation.
It is good in the treatment of lung disorders,
pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis, and indigestion.
Violet is the highest vibration of visible light.
Its effect is primarily in the area of the brain.
It is good in the treatment of mental disorders, cataracts, and paralysis.
Creative artist and workers would benefit by surrounding their room with objects of this color
and meditating and storing this color.
It is excellent in the treatment of insomnia.

Thank you Litha, I found your use of colours really interesting and informative.
My bedroom cum Sanctuary is filled with Violet, Lilac and Cream, and is a haven. I shall certainly look to the other colours as well, particularly with my clothes. Even if it's to drape an appropriately coloured scarf around my shoulders. I'm afraid I dress in an awful lot of black, grey and beige, but from now on I shall try to branch out a little.

As a New Yorker, it is not only customary for us to dress in grey silver and black, it makes us feel better. You can always tell a native NYer by their shade of clothing.
We use these colors to seal in our aura and protect ourselves from the huge amount of chaotic energies that fly around Gotham 24-7.

Wow! I loved your descriptions and theories about every colour and the effects they have on different parts of the human body!
It made me revaluat my whole wardrobe too! think Im going to have a big clear out tonight! (ocfam will be happy tomorrow).
Your thoughts also made me think why I do eat different coloured foods at different times during my monthly cycle and why I love the foods I do!
If you dont mind I would like to print these out and keep them in my Book of Shadows for the future reference?

Ahh, but Silver Venus there are beautiful browns out there! After all, Purple is only a step away from brown... Go to an art suppluy store, and look at a jar of acrylic paint, of the colors RED OXIDE, and VENETIAN RED. If it's a good art store, there should be a poster with samples of paint on it. What a glorious fallen leaf brown!
And you can use OCHRE YELLOW as a golden accent to purple, and it can be considered a brown also...

I have to admit- I've never thought of brown in the context of CANDLES- I might make a brown alter and put an ivory or ocher or copper or purple candle on it? or, maybe a brown candle... If I find brown candles taht I like I'd better get a few- just so I'll have one when and if I need one! LOL
Seems to me with all the pretty boutique candles out there right now, you could find a "Natural" colored candle with the leaves and herbs imbedded in it- wouldn't that suffice?

Most of the books say that white can be substituted when you can't get the appropriate color. Some say you should never use black candles, but they are recommended for getting rid of negativity. I stock up on them every year around Samhain.

Candle Colors
From The Craft by Dorothy Morrison
Here is a great poem that helps to remember the properties of the
different candle colors:
Proper colors for a spell
Make them work extremely well.
This list will make your magic strong
So study carefully and long
The candle colors listed here -
And all your spells will bring you cheer!
For lustful love and hot desire,
Use a candle red as fire.
If tranquil peace you now pursue,
Burn a bit of palest blue.
For protection, you may use the same;
Likewise, if your health is lame.
Pink for harmony and love
And perfect union from above.
If to attract is your intent,
Orange is what the heavens sent!
If your hold on things, in time, goes sour -
Use purple to regain your power
To increase your bank account,
Light green candles 'round about.
To ground yourself and make it stick,
Brown candles always do the trick!
To organize, use deepest blue,
For stress relief, a lavender hue.
Use teal for balance, peach for friends
Black puts bad habits at an end.
Use white if you must substitute:
It contains all hues of color suit.
If you burn white instead, it's true,
You must concentrate on proper hue.
Use these wisely. Learn them well
For each and every time you spell,
You weave a dream that you create
Into a realistic state.
The Universe will not say, NO!
But confusing it may cause woe!

I use them for protection, power, grounding, and dragon magic as well as getting rid of negativity. And of course I have a black candle for the lady and white for the lord. Lately I've been able to find black candles all year 'round, which is good. The ones I like for repelling nasty stuff only come at halloween tho - they are small and black and smell like skunk! :D I also found little black ones, I love those.
If you can't keep a lot of different colours on hand I read somewhere you should keep the white utility candles handy and a pack of markers, then you can colour the candle the appropriate colour while concentrating on your desire.

:) Never thought of coloring them! If you can find or figure out a way to make small holders, birthday candles are good and inexpensive, they even have silver and gold ones! I also found Channukah candles in the grocery store, which are slightly bigger. About $1 for 50 of them! And a good assortment of colors. Exceptfor black, of course.
The small candles are good when you want to burn a candle all the way down and can't leave one burning in the house. They have a short enough burn time where you can meditate on the whole process.
I recently learned that nasty smelling stuff drives negative energy away, so your nasty smelling candles would work really well, Myst!

I often use black candles for getting rid of negativity of situations or arguments or the way Im feeling towards something, I just concerntrate all my feeling into the candle while Im annoiting it with an oil then as it burns down so does by mood...
Birthday candles are great as we have always used them to wish with ;)

I remember once teaching a class on basic candle colors ... after we went through all the regular colors, I pulled out a couple of candles in weird colors: turquoise, peach and taupe! And we analyzed the colors and tried to figure out what each could be used for. It was a very useful exercise. We basically came to the conclusion that they were mixes of other colors (turquoise = blue + green, peach = pink + orange, taupe = brown + lavender) and would work for matters where we would use both of the other colors, but they also could have their own specific meanings based on personal associations and experience. (Turquoise, for example, could be for safety in travel, because the turquoise stone has that association.)

"Use this info similarly for what's been described for the aromatics and colors. For example, if you're an Aquarius and you want to make a candle to accent the best characteristics of that sign, you'd probably cast it out of lavender wax (scented with lavender) and decorate it with an amethyst or lapis. Another example would be an Aries making a red candle scented with cinnamon and decorated with a bloodstone. In both examples here, note the harmony between the three component choices (wax color, aromatic, crystal) and their traditional magickal associations.
If for some reason you'd rather not put crystals in the wax, you can simply place the stone on your altar with the candle and then carry it afterward to keep the magick with you. Another alternative is finding candle holders that have appropriate crystals inlaid in them to create a base of positive vibrations from which the candle can burn."

Here is an interesting site about candle colors. http://magikmyth.com/pagan/bos/table.htm

I registered because this thread caught me eye . I enjoy candle and color work , but I'm doing something a bit different . I'm making my own set of color flash cards ( just index cards colored with magick marker) and meditating on one card daily listing the way the color feels to me . I find very often that if I approach magick from a personal level rather than "by the book" I get better results.

point of clarification here:
assigning credit to the authors is groovy, but is it legal to copywrite something condensed from work of other writers without first asking their permission?
what do you mean by copywrite?

I just did ask!
As far as I can see, all the information we've shared in this thread is common information. To whom does the idea that Red is the color for the planet and god Mars go to? If you write a paragraph in your own words using these tidbits of common knowledge, the copywrite is yours. If you drew from this thread you would credit the members of the thread, and if you knew that Crowley, or Cayce, or Cunningham said a particular thing, you would cite them. But the words are yours.
I just found a site on the internet, to digress- who has huge, dire warnings all over her site, about imitators and copywrites and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law... on most pages, the warnings take up twice as much room as the writing itself. And what she has written is all of it- common knowledge. Like quartz is excellent for transmission of energy, and amythest was considered a remedy for poison.... I only hope it's because she hasn't figured out how to format her pages.

Preparation: If I don't have the appropriate colour candle to hand, I will use a white one (as already stated it contains all the colours of the spectrum). I always use a new candle.
Sorry to bump, but I'm a tad confused -
I thought it was black which contained all the colours of the spectrum, and white reflected them and contained none...?
Also: "Green is the color of Venus,"
Surely venus would be blue, as it appears blue in the night sky...?
Would be great if someone could shed light on the logic behind all this :)

White contains all the colors within the 'light' spectrum, as when light passes through a prism it manifests all the colors in the rainbow-those being red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet (purple is not an actual color in the light spectrum), and from those all other colors can be created. When it comes to paints and things, if you mix all the colors together you get a very close black, though it can be more grey or brown depending upon circumstances, thus black is often considered to contain all colors by physical means (paints, markers, etc.). Black absorbs, white reflects, scientifically speaking. So, for example, if it's a sunny day and you want to dress to keep cool, wear white as it will help reflect the heat and light. In magic, white is often considered to be a sending color, while black is an absorber. This is why I have one black and one white illuminator candle on my altar, one to absorb and bring things to me (the black one), and another to send energy out (the white one). However, black can repel things magically speaking just as good as white in some cases, which is why it is often associated with banishings. It can be confusing, I'm sure.
In regard to Venus, how it appears in the night sky is entirely irrelevant. Astrological colors vary from person to person so much, I never bother with them. I've seen everything from purple, to pink, to yellow, to even black associated with Mercury. However, you may also have heard or read this info when the Venus that was being spoken of was not the planet, but the roman goddess (aphrodite's roman counterpart), and green was a color that most often is considered sacred by both Venus and Aphrodite.
Just for my fun, brief & general color associations I follow:
White - Purity, purification, innocence, truth, clarity, divination
Black - Binding, banishing, to repel, to absorb, creating a void (such as a void of deception), introversion (discovering things within),
Grey - Balance, wisdom, spirituality, divinity
Brown - The home, hearth, & family, responsibility, grounding
Pink - Compassion, love (self, romantic, friendships), to console, matters of the heart, sweetness and softness, beauty
Silver - The goddess, the moon, psychic awareness, the unconciousness, emotions, divination
Gold - The god, the sun, power, strength, success & prosperity
Red - Elemental fire, passion, strength, courage, sexuality, vitality, power, victory
Orange - Social interactions, friendships, attraction (socially), extroversion, humor
Yellow - Elemental air, intellect, thought, creativity, travel, the mind, justice, legal matters
Green - Elemental earth, prosperity, abundance, plant and gardening magic, work/career, money
Blue - Elemental water, tranquility, dreams, healing, beauty, emotions, purification
Purple - Elemental spirit/the akasha, psychic awareness, astral projection, past life work, recalling that which has been forgotten
Note: On purple, I tend to associate it more with things that the color indigo represents, with some properties of the color violet, though I add most of violet's properties to pink.

Just as an add-on to that, I believe Venus' sacred color green stems from the fact that she was originally an agricultural goddess. It wasn't until a little later that she also adapted Aphrodite's love and fertility traits.

Quite true, but also, green was not always seen as it is now, and at one time reflected Aphrodite's divine portfolio (that sounded so D&D, sheesh).
Green reflecting elemental earth's traits is actually a relatively new idea, as brown was more associated with it in past instances to symbolize the dirt, rocks, and actual 'earth', where as green was seen more as representing plants.

I guess I should never had typed that.
In Dungeons and Dragons its what each deity rules over, or governs, such as Selune's portfolio (whom was actually taken from Greek mythology) relating to the moon, stars, and navigation. May be a corny title, but I think it's pretty appropriate when discussing various deities and the supposed things they look after.

Indeed it could, but I'm sure there are people out there which label the chakras in different colors.
For example, the throat chakra is often considered blue, yet when I had a picture of my aura taken I had a rather large purple sphere over my throat right where the chakra would be, which made me question the colors of all my chakras.

Hi, I used to post here about a year or so ago under the name kuruni or some crap like that. But anyway I drifted and I recently decided to begin doing some rituals again because I need to reattain a spiritual balance in my life because i'm all over the place emotionally and spiritually. So I decided to start researching candle magic again. But is it just me or is there no information on what oils correspond to what types of spells or whatever?
Does anyone have any information on this? I saw a post a couple pages back about what oils/aromatherapy corresponded to the signs of the zodiac, does anyone know how they correspond to candle colors/types of spells? Any information or book titles, websites, reading material would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. Its good to be back!
