I was watching a cooking program and they were cooking with food wrapped in corn husks.
Would this be ideal to try to Samhain? Anyone try it? Does it taste good? :weirdsmil

Great for holding in moisture for food. Be careful not to bruise them, and remove all the silk, or it can be bitter.

BUMP!

I'm still looking for that tamale recipe!!! If you made veggie tamales with squash & nuts, that would be great for a Samhain recipe

Here is a link to a website that gives some history of the tamale - lots of ideas! They are really more versatile than I ever thought and could be used for any fall Sabbat, with the corn husk symbolism.

Well, this same site has a step-by-step recipe page (with pictures!) and it looks very easy. They boil the pork & chicken until they are tender enough to shred, so anything that you can mush up could be put in a tamale. I am thinking that I would steam or roast a butternut squash until tender enough to mash, and then also add some turnip. She warms the seasonings in some corn oil (she doesn't cook them, just warms them together in the oil) - so as replacement, I would heat some olive oil until warm and then season with butter, brown sugar & cinnamon. Maybe some honey, if the mash needs thickening. Now, how this will taste with the Masa, I don't know  but it would be interesting to taste. Instead of the broth from boiling the pork & chicken, I would use veggie broth, or maybe the water that collected from steaming the squash.

TVP = Texturized Vegetable Protien. I'm not sure *exactly* what it is, but I know you can buy it in health food stores, like Whole Foods.

I haven't been able to get the recipe! They (the aunts) just won't budge!
My mom does have a sweet tamale recipe with raisins and pineapple that I could get.
My granny has one for corn tamales (they end up like corn cake type thingies. REALLY good) that one's quite a bit of work though since it requires grinding out the corn to a fine paste. The time I helped her she used one of those hand crank ones and honestly I just couldn't handle that! I'm a little ashamed that my 70-something year old granny was able to crank it all out MUCH faster than I could.

Textured vegetable protein (TVP) is a fibrous, dehydrated meat alternative that is usually made by a process that isolates the proteins from soy flour. TVP is often an ingredient in prepared meat analogs, such as vegetarian hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken patties and nuggets, cold cuts, ground beef, and sausage. It is also a primary ingredient in many packaged mixes for vegetarian burgers, chili, and sausage.
