I've never heard of them being dangerous, but then again, I suppose when you're dealing with anything magickal, there could be a 'dangerous' aspect. I've only used one once and it was a very exciting and scary experience. I'd never scryed before, and my friend suggested I tried using her black mirror. I remember the sensation of falling into the mirror, rather like falling into a pool of cool water. That brought me out of my trance, and I haven't picked up one again.

They can be dangerous I spose, but no more so than a crystal ball or scrying stone.
Go ahead and make her one. I think it's a great idea. :)

May I ask how a black mirror is made.

no they're not dangerous. the nature of the tool is determined by the person using it, not the tool itself.

I'd be interested in finding out how to make one too.

you just get the silver stuff off the back and paint it black, it's not hard.

You can just get a picture frame and paint the back black too. Mirrors are just metal with glass on the front, so forget the metal entirely.

I have a question about making scrying mirrors also. Pretty much all the instructions I've found on the internet recommend using flat black paint as opposed to gloss black. But some of the mirrors I see for sale through various occult shops seem to be highly reflective, almost like polished obsidian. So my question is, does it matter whether the paint is glossy or flat, or is it more personal preference?

I recommend gloss paint, & not the cheap stuff (you get what you pay for).

in order to make a black mirror, you can just buy a picture frame w/ glass in it. take the glass out and spray paint it black on one side. wait till it drys and then, put the glass back in the frame with the shiny side showing. then light incense or candles and scry like normal

Thanks for the tips, folks, and for asking the Q in the first place--this would be a great tool to make for someone who'd want/need one.

MM ~ Raven Grimassi, Ray Buckland, and who knows who else all recommend a concave mirror. Get an old glass clock face and paint the convex side. That's the best and the most traditional. But a flat one works, too.
Rick's are stone gorgeous!

Mostly because thats how mirrors where made back in the day. But either way works and mirrors now come glued into the frames, so unless your sure your can get the mirror out without breaking the frame I'd go with a picture frame. As far as paint goes I would buy high quality gloss. The flat could work, but not as well, since the gloss would reflect the late sort of they way a bottom of a scrying bowl would do.
