Hi.

I've been on and off studying Wicca for about 4-5 years now, but in the area I live it's hard to find books or anything because it's a small farming community. I feel awkward even going to a bookstore in town asking if they have, or can order books on Wicca for me because we are a primarily Catholic town, and the folks who run the bookstore I know from church when I was younger. (They are hard core Catholics).

The one book I have (Can't think of the name of it right now) is helpful but it is not the easiest to understand always. A lot of Wicca is still confusing, mostly thought spells, a book of shadows, that sort of things I can’t wrap my mind around, can anyone help?

A.

Have a look in the new pagans forum... Look for the thread "Adopt-a-newbie" by Kalika.

If you've got questions, feel free to PM me or to catch me on AIM spirit3787. I'm almost always logged in, but if I don't answer, it's 'cause I'm not around ^_^ I know enough about wicca to be helpful, but I don't actually follow it.

I would have to say right now, my biggest 'problem' is deciding which path is right for me. I feel drawn towards the Celtic/Nordic/Egyptian paths, but there are just so many total that I'm lost as a castaway.

Check out the New Pagans FAQ too. :) It has a lot of "basics" info in there, and is a good place for getting started with reading.

Also, have you considered ordering books off of Amazon.com? There are a lot of good ones out there.

If you are interested in Wicca, I'd recommend the Scott Cunningham books. They were my favorites when I was first learning.

I'm also working on setting you up with a mentor, as I received your PM. :D

Pick one of those and start with it. Research is something you have to chip away at a little bit at a time, or you easily get overwhelmed. Follow your instincts on what appeals to you, and learn more about those things first. Make a list if it helps. :)

If you're looking for books, Amazon.com is good, Barnes & Noble actually has a pretty good selection, and they can order for you, or you can go onto their website and order, or this is a great pagan website http://www.isisbooks.com

There's lots of good info on this site if you spend some time and look around. Also, we are all willing and happy to answer questions! :hugz:

Can you purchase books over the Internet? Also, your local library may have some books, and perhaps an interlibrary loan system that can get you more.

The one book I have, I got off the Internet. And as much as I would love to be able to go to the library and get one or two, same reason it's awkward going to the local book shop and ordering one, I know the people working there, and they are all Old (like 50-60 old) and very religous.

It's not that I'm ashamed of of it or anything, but I have always been at the outside fo my extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins ext) because I['m adopts. but thats a whole nother rant. I just don't want them to push me any farther away then they already do/have.

Thought I am looking at a few on Amazon.com

Also, don't feel pressured to work with an entire pantheon if you only feel drawn to one or two gods. That can also be overwhelming. If you are only drawn to Freya or Brigit, try meditating just with them first. Often, you only work with a select few out of a pantheon, anyway. Or, they may lead you deeper, as a gateway.

It's a library; it's supposed to supply books, not moral guidance. What on earth should their religious outlook (narrow as it is) have to do with what they should and shouldn't stock or order or whatever? If you do ask them for something on Paganism, are they going to make the sign of the cross and throw holy water at you? they're librarians, not priests!! If it's a public library, they'd have no right to object to whatever soemone orders on religious grounds anyway, surely? Are they likely to tell everyone that you've been ordering Pagan books? They should lose their jobs if they do.

Sorry to go off a bit  but this forcing their beliefs on everyone else really gets me.

My local library is very pagan friendly, librarians tend to be educated people who know how to think for themselves.......I used to work there too.... You can find pagan books in the teen section, the 100s and 299s. And if you see something they should have but don't then sugest it. It's cool!

I understand how that could be a problem. Could you just go into your library and read from the books without checking anything out? I know it would take longer, but it might be something you could look into. Like Kalika said, check out the New Pagan stickies on the forums. If you have any other additional question, feel free to PM me. I'd be happy to help you.

Welcome! Glad you made it here. If you go to the Adopt-A-Newbie thread and read over it, Kalika can help you get set up with a mentor.

I've had experience with Wicca for about 9 years, and although I still consider myself a student at times, I do know a little more than just the basics.

Here is a pretty good listing (http://www.tnrdlib.bc.ca/dewey.html) of the Dewey Decimal system.
