That's what a close friend of mine asked me when I told him I walk the wiccan path. He was completely serious, too, I couldn't believe it. I think he was also a little disappointed when I told him that NO, indeed, not all wiccans are lesbians! :noway: I'm from an area where people are EXTREMELY conservative-- any "wild" ideas such as believing in a Goddess instead of THE God are considered enough to ostracize one from the community. People stare unabashedly with a "You're going to burn in Hell" kind of look when I wander to the Magic section of our local bookstore. Do you guys from big cities experience this? Maybe it's because I life in BFE South Dakota :). Sorry about the rant-- I'm just curious as to how everyone gets treated. Thanks!

I'm not Wiccan, but I am a witch. Most people around here are used to witchy-type people, but some of them still aren't comfortable with it. One of my oldest friends thinks I'm going to hell for sure and she won't step foot in my house anymore because she's worried it will rub off or something. I have a lot fun inviting her over and watching her scramble for excuses. The book store is a different story. There's only one in town and it's staffed by several ladies - some of them pagan and some Christian and they all get along beautifully. All in all, it's a lot easier here in California than most places.

Well.. i know of at least one Wiccan coven where it seems you must be gay or lesbian to be a member... since the majority of their members are gay/lesbian.. and if you aren't .. well.. then never think you'll end up being with the "in" crowd... And they have given the locals the impression that anyone who is a member must be gay/lesbian... even some of the members look at the few straight people in the coven as an oddity... so yeah... I can see why some people would ASSUME that all Wiccans must be lesbian/gay if they only had a coven like that to base their opinions on

lol! That is silly! :T I am not a lesbian, but a wiccan for sure! I would hope that all Wiccans accept lesbians and do not discriminate against anyone for their sexuality, though I'm sure there are a few out there who do. :( Anyway, it is a good thing to let people think if they're interested in you, and you would rather they weren't! :D lol!

Well, if the only Wiccans you've ever heard about or met are Dianic, then how would you know there was any other kind?
I met a group like that several years ago. They flat out told our group that men can't do magic/energy work. Huh?

That is funny. Although I'm not really surprised anymore at some of the things people say or do. (Like my sister shrieking and running the other way when I pull out my tarot cards_whistle_ )
I can agree with Lunacie, though. If that's all you've seen, how would you know any different?

MM ~ I don't think there's a big Dianic presence in SD - I think that wingnut preacher started the whole idea, you know, the guy who said feminism causes women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice Witchcraft and become lesbians. There's your root. :yayah:

Could it be that your friend's only exposure to Wicca before now comes from "Buffy"? Or could he be taking that bumper sticker a mite too seriously? You know the one: "Sorry I missed church; I was busy practicing Witchcraft and becoming a lesbian!"
There are some covens that will only accept queer members - just as there are others that will only accept straight ones. Not all Dianics are lesbians; it's just that the ones who are are more open about it than they might be if they practiced some other religion.

I concluded some time ago that crap is what the vast majority of people believe in. The masses are divorced from reality; adrift in their own make believe little worlds. A 12 Dimensional Universe with 12 Strand DNA and 12 Chakras is entirely too much for the left Hemispere of the Brain to comprehend.
P.S. Are all Christians Homophobic, Monogamistic and Heterosexual? Or are many of them the final outcome of limited consciousness, poor education and child abuse? 8O

I always get strange looks when I go to the New Age section of the Book Store. It is unnerving. When i've bought books the cashier kind of looks twice at me....maybe looking for horns or something i dont know. I did find a "witch friendly" store but its a drive and a half to get there. I've been there a couple of times and i really feel comfortable there.

Actually this is an interesting point, the idea that Wiccans are mostly female .... because of the word 'witch', I guess. I'm becoming more and more interested in Wicca, but I don't know, maybe this preconception that it's predomanantly female makes it even harder for me to actually say that I want to become a Wiccan than it does for females? that's what I kind of feel anyway; I guess it comes down to Buffy again.

I am still discovering my path, I have studied wicca, and in my class ws both lesbian and non lesbian members oh yeah and even a man, although his wife assured us he was no lesbian he did like girls.
I think part of the misconception comes because often in the lesbian community woment tend to gravitate more towards womens art, matriarchal religion as opposed to patriarchal, womens issues, etc. and for some it leads them into Wicca or Pagan. I hear its because in accepting a Wiccan or Pagan path youdont find harsh judgementalist as often as you would in the "mainstream religions"....In the Wiccan or Pagan tradition people are generally happy share your joy and excitement of learning and growing in spirit as opposed to what body you are inhabiting this time...
Personally, I dont wear flannel unless I am sick and wanting to cover up and hibernate in something warm and soft... then I wear my "I feel Icky" shirt and crawl under a blanket with some hot soup or tea until I feel better..
I think the statement as a whole that all wiccans are lesbians or even all lesbians are wiccan ranks up there with they are only lesbian because they haven't had the right man... simply foolish

I used to work at a bookstore. One day I came in to buy some stuff from that "New Age" section. Haha. My co-workers were all of a sudden like, "What the hell??" or "I thought you were a Christian!" One guy I worked with was like, "So are you a witch, are you going to cast some spells?" And I'm like, "Yeah, if you don't shut the @#$% up." He shut up. And no I wasn't a witch. Oh dear..... I can understand how you feel coming from a conservative family... however, they usually mean no harm. It just stems from a lack of knowledge.
As to what its like where I live.... well, there are some advantages and disadvantages:
1. Belief in the existance of a metaphysical world is a mainstream thing for a lot of people.
2. No one stares at people who browse the new age section of a bookstore because they might be interested in it themselves.
3. Some folks will accept that its entirely possible, if I said I saw a long haired ghost with a massive tongue coming out of its mouth near an old decrepit house nearby...
Conversely,
1. The city I live in is very small. Everyone knows everyone and sometimes I have to look over my shoulder to make sure that the people I know don't catch me doing stuff that would be considered a big no-no to them at least.
2. Anyone doing magic that is outside of the types practiced by the mainstream religions is immediately considered to be dabbling in forbidden arts.

:fofftopic OK, I hate to take this thread down an entirely unrelated path, but why do so many people mention wearing or not wearing flannel when they discuss lesbianism? Maybe it's just because, in both of the states I've lived in, everybody wears flannel, regardless of gender or orientation. I've never ever associated it with sexuality. I just associate it with being warm. :bundled:
I guess I do also associate it with being young and broke, but that's mainly because all the ones I have were either hand-me-downs from my mom or rescued from free boxes in my college dorm. Now that I'm allegedly grown up, with a permanent job and an impending marriage, I've found myself looking at those literally threadbare flannels with their ripped sleeves and missing buttons and thinking, "I should make myself a sweater to wear around the house when I'm cold, so I can stop wearing these really tatty things." But if I gave away every piece of flannel I own, it wouldn't make me less a lesbian - nor would giving every piece of flannel I own to my mother would make her any more of one!
So where the heck did this association come from?

OK I suppose I'll have to clarify how it works.
Wiccans are NOT lesbians, they are BISEXUAL.
Thats right folks, Wiccans have sex with each other for white magick, and with men who they keep tied up (AKA Warlocks) for Black magick. They tie each other up for threesomes for grey magick. Grey Magick is their most common and most dangorus branch of magick because because it's impossibly to recognise or trace. If you ever find to wiccans tied up, resist the temptation to pick up their preverse magical instruments and become their warlock! Untie them as this takes their power away and then turn them in to your local Paster for help with their condition, and then leave quickly as disembodied demons will be fleeing the hand of God (the church) and looking for new hosts.

I can't say that I'm from the "big city", just a little 'burb south of Boston, but when I hear things like this I can't help but be thankful that I live here. I know more wiccians/witches/athiest/pagans than I do christians. Honestly, it's more like "wow... you're a christian!"
Who knows... maybe it's because we've got the whole Salem history going on around here that people aren't afraid to come out of the broom closet... or maybe I just attract those kind of people ;)

Fortunatly for you they're Bi and Jesus already paid for all of your sins!!! Now if you would kindly return me that refund...

the Wiccan communitiy is no different from other communitiys, we have our gays, strights, and bis.. Most peole think (or so I have be told), that Wiccans are gay, becuase of the kind of spells we do. With gems, wands, alters, candles, and robs. and being gay isn't a bad thing!

Hmm. Being from a really small town myself, I can identify with the feeling of being ostracized for not being Christian. When I go to college in a much larger town however, people are a bit more open. Sometimes I will run across a person who will refuse to talk to me once they discover I'm pagan, but for the most part people are pretty cool about it. Nobody knows I am bisexual though except my close friends here. *wonders which would be more offensive to the locals *
In my college town we have a pagan student organization--something that would never fly in my hometown, especially not at the mostly conservative community college there. Hell, we had a hard enough time starting a videogame club there. :ahhhh:

I have never told anyone bout my 'spiritual leanings' and while that might sound quite extreme (it gives new meaning to 'solitary' right?) the conservative lil town I live in would probably die of shock. My mates would all think I'd finally lost it -but what do you expect from 18 year olds??? Saying I was lesbian would probably go down better! I wouldn't tell my parents in a million years and I always cringe going into the library. I simply couldn't be bothered with the stares and gossip so I just keep it to myself...its easier that way. But I do hate the crappy opinion most have of us- they would probaly have nothing but respect if I was a good christian girl:lol:

Well the male Wiccan certainly aren't all lesbians. And some of us girls are bisexual so there ;) (not that I'm Wiccan, just Pagan).
I think that this kind of stereotype comes from the close relationship between Goddess spirituality and Dianic Wicca and radical feminism, which then leads into an assumtion of "all feminists are lesbians". Which is perpetuated by the kinds of "white witches" and Wiccans that the media finds to represent us on talk shows and special interest features around Hallowe'en.

For those that are interested, here is the meeting minutes (http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/morningstar2651/030305minutes.pdf) of a student senate meeting in which a Pagan organization is brought up to the senate of a Christian college. That was a long night.

Thanks!
I guess it’s all relative. I could walk into the Barnes & Noble near me and lay a corpse on the counter, as long as it had a barcode it wouldn’t raise an eyebrow. (*Pricecheck on corpse at register two*). Actually we get alot of that in NY.

LMAO Thats a good one. I have never gotten anything like that before but the best one I get is walking down the street with my 3 year old daughter. Now keep in mind she is a loud forward child that says exactly what is on her mind when she is thinking it. She has no clue what shy is.
We will be walking down the street and she will just start singing, and not just singing but bellowing, her Goddess Bless Me song. The looks on peoples faces are enough to make me laugh so hard I could cry. It is one thing to believe it yourself but when you teach it to a child the looks are so funny. Its like they are thinking "your her parent and your conemning her to hell...." or something.
It gives me the total giggles..........

Did you ever notice how many "mainstream" religions think that heaven is limited to a certain total number of saved souls. Generally that means just them. Yet they never say the same about hell.

all Wiccans are lesbians even the male ones. And if you disagree you are a closet lesbian and in denial. Just like all Christians are transgender and all Muslims drink pigs blood on weekends.
Dear oh dear. I haven't really experienced any bad comments because of what i believe in. Probably because i don't make it known, if they ask i'll tell them but otherwise i tend not to because i don't want every people on my back and i'm happy keeping it private. Some people see religion as something private others want to make it public.
It's an interesting misconception that all Wiccans are lesbians. I haven't heard that one before. But i guess its because Wicca can be seen as pro woman. Ie the introduction of a female diety. Any way i will definatley have to consider whether that misconception is correct. Am i a lesbian?

A lot of people think of every wiccan being bi or lesbian, for the fact that the religion is pro-femenism.
Yes, mostly wiccans are women, but there are male wiccan's to. Not every wiccan female is lesbian, or even bi, they are just pro-fem. Being a pro-fem myself doesn't make me lesbian or bi.

Well.. i know of at least one Wiccan coven where it seems you must be gay or lesbian to be a member... since the majority of their members are gay/lesbian.. and if you aren't .. well.. then never think you'll end up being with the "in" crowd... And they have given the locals the impression that anyone who is a member must be gay/lesbian... even some of the members look at the few straight people in the coven as an oddity... so yeah... I can see why some people would ASSUME that all Wiccans must be lesbian/gay if they only had a coven like that to base their opinions on
I love those kind of covens. lol. Way to turn the mainstream values inside out. lol. :santasmil

 HA! All Wiccans are lesbians, eh? Then I should expect a more romantic relationship with one of my best friends any time now, since she's bi. No wonder Willow and Tara hooked up after she became Wiccan!
But on the serious side, all Wiccans are NOT lesbians. I think it'd be cool to be bi, but alas! I am perfectly straight!
I'm still openminded about sexuality, though.

I think since certain faiths seem to condemn (or people assume they do) homosexuality or bisexuality, this may make it seem more prevelate in Wicca. I think its less like a Christian would come out as being Bi or Gay or in a Christian community. Same with some other faiths. But, if Wicca is not against bi or homosexuality it may seem more prevelant when really it is just people being more open. Just a thought.

Maybe that's because most Pagan lesbians follow the Dianic religion, which isn't actually Wiccan. If you Google "Dianic" you might find something.

thx, but I already found that. We're looking for the waky wiccan lesbians, or the wacky dianic lesbians. This site tells us that dianics tend to be lesbians, but the rest of it is about goddesses and inner goddess spirituality. Thats all good and fine but what we want is decidedly lesbian, or bisexual.
