Was Christopher Columbus possibly a Pirate, rather than the Italian Gentry we've come to believe? DNA researchers will be doing tests to see if Christopher Columbus could be Catalan Cristofol Colom, who airbrushed his past to conceal his activities as a pirate and conspirator against the king.

Sounds like a compelling argument...

Many people view Columbus as a hero. I for one do not... he slaughtered native americans and enslaved others. On his very first voyage he returned to spain with natives in chains.

Maybe if it is found out he is a bloodthirsty pirate people will realize he is no hero, and that he should not be honored with his own holiday and stamps and stuff.

I'm currently reading a book on the history of pirates called "The History of Pirates" anyway, the book does contend he was a pirate or at the least a privateer.

I agree. He's always seemed a bully and a thug to me.. so, his being a pirate would certainly not surprise me.

he probaly was a pirate, it is strange how that sort of stuff paled when he acheived hero status

I can see him being a privateer... the royals funding his voyages would hold with that.

I remember reading something about this awhile back.. something along the lines of his family being "against the crown" and that if his true identity were known at the time he would have ended up in prison... I want to say it was Nat Geo who did a show on it... anyway it had something to do with the origin of his name not fitting in with where he claimed he was from.. I'll have to do some research and see if I can find it...
