View Full Version : Something strange that happened to me in an Egyptian temple

Em Hotep!

This is a bit of an unusual question for our forum and I am not sure where I should post it...

During my second stay in Egypt several years ago, I had a strange experience in a temple. I am almost positive it was Edfu, but there is also a possibility it might have been Philae.
The temple was crowded, so before leading our group to the naos, our guide decided to have us gather into one of the lateral "storage rooms" to give us explanations.
As soon as I entered the room, I noticed that the air felt much "thicker" than in the rest of the temple. I immediately felt ill at ease. It felt like I did not have any personal space, even though no one was actually standing that close to me.
I was the last person to leave the room and as I started walking toward the door, I felt this hand on my back that was literally pushing me out of the room. There was absolutely no one behind me. As I left the room, I heard this voice in my head telling me "Go now, leave, NOW!"

I am not claustrophobic. I felt perfectly fine before and right after this incident (other than the fact that I apparently turned so white that my mother thought I was having a heat stroke 8O ). I was not religious back then so it is not like I was expecting or looking for an "encounter" of any sort.

For the longest time I thought it was just strange but not worth losing sleep over. Curiously, for the past two weeks, this story has been on my mind a lot and I now feel it is important for my personal growth to look more into it.
Does anyone have comments?
Do you think this should be posted in the Paranormal or even the Divination forum instead of here?

Any input would be greatly appreciated :)

There's probably more people on here who know more, but maybe it was a spirit that wasn't too fond of humans (do they exist in Egyptian cosmology?) or maybe a curse was placed on the temple to protect someone or something.

There are destructive, human-hating spirits: the "muuet" as they are called. However, they are, themselves, once-human who refused to move on. Over time, they have lost their humanity and become mere personifications of guilt, hate, loneliness, anger, and other negative emotions. They be quite nasty.

However, I just find it hard to think there would be a muuet nest within a Temple... Sure its in ruins, but still. Maybe I'm just being too romantic about it.

I lean more toward your "curse" theory, or at least that someone/something wanted that room left alone. If it had been a muuet, there would have been something worse than a voice commanding people to leave.

Its really all confuzzling.

I know this might be off topic but are there any books that deal with the supernatural beings of Kemetic cosmology, since i've got some suggestions on the gods (which i will get one day), but i don't know much about the other supernatural beings.

In my opinion, the question would hinge on what was originally stored in the Temple. Was it storing the offerings of the Name? Maybe one of the Priests stayed behind to protect the chamber?

I can't imagine a Muuet lingering in a Temple. It seems to me that it's more likely that it was a Spirit who feels that the exclusive parts of the temple (translation - most of it) should remain that way. Remember that in the past, only Priests could spend time in the depths of the Temples.

And all confuzzled I am all right!

What I really do not understand is why that one room in particular... everything was fine anywhere else in the temple. From what I read in a guidebook, it used to be a storage room for incense and unguents... maybe whatever "presence" was there simply did not like my perfume! :D

wow cool
I wouldn't know what to tell you either other then something didn't want you in there!! But for how long were you in there cause you said that you were the last one out. If you felt uneasy in there why did you wait to be the last one out? I find that strange!!
I want to go there so bad so hoprfully someday!!!!!!!!!!
I have some funky connections with egyptians too that I can't fully understand I am trying to learn more just to try to make sense of things but there is so much!!!!!!

How long ago did this happen? I wonder why you are thinking about it now?

Zephyrstorm, I did not see your reply before posting mine. Yes, what you said makes absolute sense... unguents and incense definitely were sacred offerings and maybe someone or something was trying to make sure they stayed nfr w'b (good and pure)...
All the more so that we were so close to the Naos, I can definitely see how a bunch of unruly tourists would not be welcome there!

Now why I was the only one to be kicked out of that particular room I will probably never know, but at least it all makes much more sense now... thank you everyone for your input! :hugz:

MalPixie, these are very good questions.

Basically I was the last one out because I was the first one in! When I visit a museum or monument I always follw the guide closely so that I do not miss their speeches (it is also the only way for me to see anything as I am quite short!). So I had to wait until everyone had left to leave the room myself (the doors are very narrow).

It happened in the summer of 2001. I have no idea why it is coming back to me so strongly at the moment.

I really hope that you will make it to Egypt one day, there are no words to describe the grandeur of these monuments... :hearteyes

I am going in 35 days!! :D I can't wait....

As for your experience, maybe the reason you were the only one to experience it, is because the other people were not receptive of it.. maybe the entity was telling everyone and pushing everyone, but only you picked it up???

We are going to do a 9 day tour - Starting in Cairo, we'll go over to Giza and around there. We then fly to Luxor, and travel by a variety of means to places around that area (i.e. the Valley of the Kings/Queen and Karnak). We then go on a boat cruise down to Aswan and Fly to Abu Simbel. Fly back to Aswan, boat back to Luxor fly back to Cairo - seeing all sorts of stuff on the way.

Before we go to Egypt we are going to Singapore and on the way home we are going to Kuala Lumpor... 3 weeks all up (for my honeymoon) Should be great.
