View Full Version : Can you be Kemetic and another religion?

I was wondering can you be Kemetic and another religion, since on the Kemetic Orthodox site, it say's that you can practice Kemetism and another religion, except if you're a priest, i think. Does anyone here do this, what are your experiences, do you think the Kemetic gods would mind, are there any religions or gods (maybe in your opinion) that wouldn't be compatible (like to me, i haven't read the exodus, but it doesn't sound like Yahweh and the Egyptian gods would get on well, but maybe they would).

It's just i'm attracted to a few different religions, but wasn't sure if i could, practice Kemetism, and, maybe, Hellenic Reconstructionism or Roman Reconstructionism (although i'm also interested in Asatru, Canaanite paganism, Sumerian and Jewish paganism, i know that sound's like a lot:)), but i'd like to ask now, so that i wouldn't get any angry gods after me (i know that proberbly sounds dumb), also if you practice Kemetism and then leave for another, but have a connection with the Kemetic gods, would they try to stop you or come with you (and if so, how would they get on with other gods, do you have any thoughts or guesses on how they'd react).

Anyway, i hope that made sense, and thanks for any help.

i'm not sure if it's ok or not. I'll let someone else answer that who is more knowledgeable than I. However, if you have some interests in all of those other religions, and you say you're not sure you would want to remain in a kemetic path, then why not just study these religions before choosing? You don't have to be practicing, but it seems like you'd be shortchanging all these religions if you're practicing all at once.
I wouldn't dedicate myself so quickly. Just try and learn these different paths and wait before you decide what you want to do.

I can't speak for all of us, but my answer is yes. If you keep them seperate in some form, I don't see why not. I know of Kemetics who also practice Asatru, Buddhism and even Christianity. I think Deities from any pantheon can call on you, so why not? Unless you feel compelled to choose one over another, I think you'll do fine with practicing more than one religion.

Cool thanks for the answers, so say if i felt called to Buddhism or Sumerian paganism, as long as i kept them seperate, i could practice both of them?.

Absolutely. It's up to you if you want to blend them, but I think it's best to keep them apart - I don't know if the different deities would ALL like to be honoured in, say, the kemetic way, you know? Establish different rites or such for different paths, and I think you'll do great. :)

Hey! Look at me! I'm a case in point! :D

Seriously. I am a Shemsu of Kemetic Orthodoxy, and a Lycian Wiccan, simultaneous and with very few issues. (Mostly just time issues. Who ever has any time anymore!) It is considered "Perfectly OK" in Kemetic Orthodoxy to persue other faiths, so long as one can keep all oaths and obligations to both faiths, and so long as one keeps them distinct from one another. In other words, I don't water down my KO with Wicca, and I don't water down my Wicca with KO -- I keep them respectfully at a distance. (Of course, internally I do have to reconcile them philosophically, in terms of my personal faith which is aside from organized faith, or what KO calls State Religion.)

As an ultimate proof of the matter, consider that Her Holiness Hekatawy I (AUS) is Herself involved in Vodoun (although I forget which Sosyete She is part of) and makes occasional visits to Haiti to persue that. I figure if the King Herself is able to do this, then there are truly no limits on the practice.

I also have considered this just something of about Christianity I can’t let go but then again that could change in the future. I can’t wait to take the next class KO has made my heart beat more joyfully after joining.

I believe that you can whole heartily. I practice both Kemetic and Hellenism but my main focus is Kemetic. I honor the Egyptian gods as well as Athena and Hermes. I think that it's interesting to see people practicing more than one type of spirituality. I believe that as long as you keep them separate then your fine.

These guys sycretize hellenic and kemetic thought. It was done thousands of years ago, so why not now?

Exactly, eh?
Some of the Egyptian gods were Nubian, or from different regional parts of the empire and became a part of the same pantheon much later in history.

May I assume that when people refer to "keeping the two separate" they refer mostly to using culturally specific rituals? It seems like a bit of a headache to keep two parts of who you are sectioned off much more than that.

And anyways OP, if you're worried about the Gods being angry, don't ask us. Ask them! Either directly or by humbly trying to incorporate the worship of a God from another pantheon (a gentler one, perhaps, who is hard to insult? Not Kali or Zeus. ;) )

I'm personally a Pantheist following First Nations traditions, and a Kemetic. I also worship Hermes of Greece, though. :D
