KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah researchers are in Pulau Tiga to verify if some bones found on a beach there belong to the prehistoric marine reptile Plesiosaur that is described as a cross between a turtle and a snake.

Led by Prof Felix Tongkul, the UMS team combed the beach for more bone specimens yesterday.

A group of fishermen found the bones on March 30, and they estimated that the creature had died about a month before that.

When shown a picture of the skeleton of the Plesiosaur said to date back to the Triassic Period more than 200 million years ago, fisherman Helmi Hassan said there was a strong resemblance between the skull of the reptile and that he found on Pulau Tiga.
