View Full Version : Runes - Questions

I started my rune class last night. The person teaching it (Mike) is very seriously into Asatru and is looked upon almost like a god in the pagan community. We've already received several very long e-mails giving detailed information about the gods and goddesses.

Last night, Mike brought a huge selection of books on runes that he recommended - or not - for study. One of the criticisms that he had for Lisa Peschel's book was that she instructs to cast a protective circle before doing rune work. He says that this is not necessary and implied that it is an insult to the gods.

Any thoughts?

I really enjoyed the class. 12 people had said that they were going to be there and only 7 showed up. The energy in the group was positive and powerful. Two hours went by in about ten minutes. We will be meeting every other week and will work together for about a year.

Hmm... well, I can't truly say I always cast a circle when I do a Rune working... but I always recommend to others that it be done, especially 'beginners'...

As for it being an insult to the Gods... well, all I know is that they grant my workings... I think I probably know who Mike is (from Tulsa, right?)... really good guy, & really knowledgable on Rune Lore & Tradition; pay attention in this class, & you'll learn a lot from him. But I think you're already learning to separate Rune Lore from Asatru politics (that subject could fill a whole other forum, one I'm personally thankful we don't have here!), else you'd not have brought the question here. In Asatru, as in all religions, there are those that lean to one extreme or the other... that's the main reason I no longer have any 'formal' dealings with the Asatru community... whether Folkish or Universalist, most of them I know are too radical for my taste, & I'm too Moderate for theirs...

You know, of course, I am the High Emperial Grand Dragon of the Great Moderate Conspiracy in America... :rotfl:

Sounds like I'm going to have lots of questions, then. Yes, Mike considers Odhinn to be a drinking buddy.

Which brings up another question - actually it's more in relation to the gods - I read somewhere that those dedicated to Odhinn tend to die violently as Odhinn does not hesitate to sacrifice his own. Which makes me very concerned about one of my friends. Know anything about that?

Yesterday the coolest thing happened - my associate and I were driving around doing field work and I was gazing out the window. We were driving past a very wealthy neighborhood in Tulsa, and I happened to notice that the design on the addition walls had a design carved along the top. The design was definitely Dagaz. Another Big Bang, maybe?

Yup, sounds like the same Mike... not that there's anything wrong with that, except I think Thor would be more fun as a drinkin' buddy... 8O

Well, that's in the Tradition, for sure... I don't know that I can quote you Lore to back it up... however, if your friend is one of Odin's Chosen, he or she is protected by Valkyries... nothing can happen to them 'til their threads of Wyrd are woven to their ends.

Yes... as you begin to work with Runes more & more, you'll be amazed where you find them... next time you're in an elevator, look at the 'doors open' & 'doors closed' buttons, & report what you notice back here...

Nope, free as a bird but probably a little old for you:smooch:
Yes, but need to get back into practice. Nobody here to cook for much anymore. I can still do really great Italian meatballs, lasagne and Tabouli :mmm:

Sometimes I wonder who I'm getting mixed up with - some of my friends are a bit out of touch with reality

I'm relieved to hear that!

Thought so. I don't think I'd ever have noticed something like that before! Hmmm, let me think - I know sometimes the up or down buttons might be Tyr......next time we go visiting prospective referral sources I'll take a closer look!

As to answer your q's ~ I agree with Rick the high, grand.. hat guy! ~ cast a circle before you do any working I have always thought that it actually acknowledges the gods and the energies around you. & why would a god punish you with a really ouch! painful death for following him? Surely not any of them?

Our second class was Monday night. Our leader said that one cannot truly and effectively work with the runes unless they have studied all of the lore. Thoughts?

Hmm... that's a tough one... I reckon I'd say that one could be effective without immersing oneself too deeply in the Rune Lore, but to be the most effective... yes, you must study the Lore (he left out Tradition... not exactly the same, but equally important)... the more you understand what Runes are, the better you'll be able to use 'em...

Actually, I think he did include tradition, my mistake 8O I agree with what you said. As you know, our leader is "immersed too deeply" ;)

I've finally had a chance to do some reading this week, and there is so very much of it! I'm finding it fascinating.

it helps to know the lore becase the in the lore you will get a deeper undersating of the runes it is a must for all who want to master them. years ago before thorinson and aswynn that was the only way to you could learn the runes
