View Full Version : Vedism based question, honoring certian goddesses

So from the few sites I found on Yahoo search, Vedism seems to be the Reconstruction path on the ancient Vedic religion. Which is cool.

But I can't seem to find any information regarding the worship of certian Vedic deities in modern times, such as Ushas and Ratri (chhaya and Surya also linked to them).
When I was reading though parts of the Rig-Veda I was drawn to all the passages with her, she and the hymns are just so beautiful. Since then I found many sites explaining her and her functions/symbolism/role but none on her worship in the past and today in the context of Vedism.

How would one honor Ushas today?
Reciting her hymns?
Watching the morning sky?
I don't want to genericly apply worship practices of Aurora, Eos or Nyx and Nox for example onto Ushas and Ratri.

Saraswati, another Vedic goddess on the other hand I know all about. It's just the other lesser know (by todays standards) dieties that I'm having problems figuring out. There's only one hymn to Ratri and she's only mentioned in a few other hyms.

Should I just follow my instincts and honor them in ways that feel right?

Still applies.

I did find 108 names of Surya and more info about him (the temples in India, his history and role in the Rig Veda, lore, etc).
I even found some sort of puja like thing decicated to him.
I'm not entirely sure as it was in romanized Sanskrit with no translation.

Does anyone honoring Eastern deties (specifically Vedic) have any suggestions?

Do you honor them as gods or as symbolic aspects of nature (ie Surya is just the sun personified)?
I personally see him as both.
I see him as a symbolic/metaphor of the sun (the heat, the passage thought the day, etc -- him and Ushas, Ratri, Chhaya and Sanjana fitting in there as well) but I also see him as a spirit/god and an aspect of Brahman. As I believe Brahman is all and the sun is part of him (technically he's not even a him as he's beyond pronouns, but you know what I mean!). It's said that he's (Surya) the most visable god and it's true-- everyone can see Surya, unlike say Shiva.

Perhaps it's my pantheistic side that's appealing to the Vedic deities as they're more down to earth and accessable. Surya the sun. Ushas the dawn. Ratri the night. Stuff like that. I am also drawn to later Hindu deities, but I got that cover for the most part. There's tons of info about them all online. It's just hard finding anything for the Vedic ones as they slipped out of favor over time (Though many do have temples today).

There is a fellow in Bhagavan Das's autobiography who is a devotee of Surya. If I remember correctly he goes mad with divine love for Him (couldn't have been the acid too;). Anyway, I was blessed to be able to visit Konark Temple in Orissa, and while the tour was pretty boring, I left feeling that Surya is still very much with us, in many forms.
I think you should always follow your instincts when it comes to worship, but also try out that Puja and/or chanting the 108 names. I doubt you'll be able to find much on the worship of the Ushas or Ratri in the US, there is probably some regional stuff floating around at Temples in India-it could be hard to churn out.
