MILLERSPORT, Ohio -- Is it a lion? A coyote? Or is it just an extremely large cat? Central Ohioans have a variety of opinions about an animal that has been seen in the area for the last two years.

Bob Lombardo, of Lewis Center, e-mailed nbc4i.com some pictures of an animal that emerged from the woods near his home on Saturday night.

Lombardo said the animal had an "awkward stride," was lean, and its tail dragged on the ground.

I read a book about some sightings of a north american lion in central ohio about 10 years ago. Pantera Atrox is the scientific name, I think...

North American lions are known to have existed in NA during the ice age but supposedly died out. I guess it could be possible they survived, but it is also possible the sightings are just ghosts of those lions... and why not? Don't animals have ghosts?

Or, it could just be a domesticated cat that got large, or a known species of cat someone released into the wild. In fact, that is the most likely possibility.

Wouldn't be the first time those alleged rumors were flying around about the central U.S., supposedly in the 50's or 60's they released large cats to control deer populations in Indiana, and in Decatur, Illinois, there have been sightings of large cats. The city of Decatur is on land that was once used by local Native Americans as burial grounds, and was considered to them to be unplottable (because of the energy there, it's all in "Haunted Decatur" by Troy Taylor). Some believed that Decatur was almost like a portal to other worlds, which is how some thought that is why the lion turned up there (almost like a worm-hole or something of that sort).

Anyhoo, I've got a link to some of Troy Taylor's sites on my website.. if my sig is working the link is below.

It could just be a domesticated cat, or it could be a coyote.

IIRC, and don't quote me on this, coyotes and foxes are more closely related to cats than to dogs. I know for sure foxes are, but not so much coyotes.

Could be a coyote....but they don't slink like cats do, they trot. I see plenty out here. But, there are coyotes in that part of the country, there are coyotes in Kentucky, where I'm originally from.

I don't think it's a lion, it looks too much like either a domesticated cat, or a coyote.

The pictures aren't very clear, but I had the same thought. It looks like an Autralian dingo. It doesn't look a thing like a feline to me, *shrugs*

Thats what I was thinking. It has the same head shape and body as a dingo.

I agree. A dingo is a near perfect match.

could be a new breed of dog or cat or an old one that's been pushed out of it's home.

Or it could be a lion...who knows...idiots who think having wild exotic animals for pets dont realize how big they get when they get older..and they will ALWAYS be wild...so of course they dont wanna get in trouble and let it loose.

Yep, or it could be a domesticated dog. I've seen a lot that look like dingo's but are mixed.

This is a Carolina Dog, they are a wild dog breed that some say are America's original and most ancient dog. They have been compared to Dingos maybe because of their appearance.

My dog is part Dingo, and it doesn't look like the picture. LOL

I live near where these sightings are. I see coyotes alot and they do not look like the picture.

I am wondering if it could be a savannah cat. People around here seem to be getting them as pets. And look at the size of them!

It looks more like a husky/wolf mix to me...or the Carolina dog. Could also be the dingo. Definately doesn't look like a cat...

You know what it looks like to me....A young Afghan hound or maybe a Saluki....seriously the back isn't exactly right, but it coud be. And I live near where Carolina Dogs run wild and I've seen them in the flesh...Ain't one... wish I could find the link to the scientist working with them out at the Savannah River Site...but here's a link to a site of someone trying to make it a recognised breed http://dogbreedinfo.com/caralinadog.htm
