View Full Version : Types of divination in Kemet?

What kinds of divination did the ancient Egyptians use, did they have any special types of traditional divination tools? Do Kemetics use Egyptian styled tarot cards too or do some recons just prefer traditional divination techniques?

Because my husband is interested in Kemet, I'm looking for someone who could possibly do a reading for him, PM me if you would like to.

I know very little on this topic, but I know that some Kemetic Orthodox are trained in a divination form called fedw (four) - I don't know the details of it, since I'm not schooled in it myself, but perhaps one of them can come forth and explain it a bit. :) I'm not sure if any fedw people are on here or not.

I'd be really interested in knowing this stuff too! I love the tarot, i really enjoy it. I'd be interested in a kemet style of divination though.

On another note, does anyone know when the next session of beginner classes for kemetic orthodoxy is? The dates on the website are not updated.

Learning Fedw is on my to-do-list. All I know at this point is that when a person does Fedw the questions are answered by the diviner's Parents. So for example, when I learn it, all my answers will come from Bast-Mut and Amun.

I know a lot of the Shemsu in the House use Tarot too.

Edit: The next beginner's class is very soon, Harmony. The last class is finishing their graduation right now. :) maybe two weeks? (didn't see your question until I hit post).

I have an Egyptian style Tarot deck I absolutely adore. That's as far as my forays into divination go. But, it's a good deck, reliable, will get jealous and refuse to read for me if I even think of using another deck for readings. XD Aww, but I love it so. I haven't felt any particular push to learn any other divination methods yet.

Do you think that it would be too late to apply?

It's never too late to apply. :) as a friend of mine says "we aren't going anywhere"

but seriously, I'm sure they'd be more than happy to have you join up.
I was going to retake the class this time, but I'd miss three weeks of it traveling to see family. - so I'll take it next time.

Good luck. :)

I applied. I wonder how strict they are about their applicants. I'm worried I won't get in. lol. What kind of screening do you think they do?

I'll on pins and needles until i get an answer I guess.

Heh. They let me in, so I'm sure they'll let a nice girl like you in. :rotfl:

Seriously, I think they just look for sincerity of interest and a willingness to learn the House's way of looking at things. It's all pretty laid-back, as I recall; I took the class several years ago, but I doubt it's changed very much (some newer remetj and/or shemsu could correct me on this if I'm wrong).

You'll get in!
From my experience as long as you don't seem waaaaay out there and that your not sincere you have nothing to worry about.
Though I too was worried when I sent my application it, everyone is.
But now I'm a Remetj, I took the last summer classes. (is NefertSeba on there).

As far as divinations I read they used scrying-- smoke and black mirrors. I think.

oh!
There is evidence of dream divinations from Ancient Egypt too. I can't remember what book it is that has the "dream of _____ = bad ______" in it.

And I second what Nehmet and Agaliha said about the beginner's class.

thanks for the vote of confidence everyone! :)

I'm curious now... how does scrying with smoke and black mirrors work? sounds pretty wicked.

When I applied I wondered all the same things. I was worried that they wouldn't think I was sincere enough or that my answers were dumb, but thats basically what I worry about every time I post here. I got in though and I'm sure you two will probably get in too. :)

I think that part of the screening process is to have you make the effort. The questions are things that you *should* think about when you are exploring a new spirituality! That and they want to not let in anyone who says "I'm gathering dirt on you scumbags so that I can expose you for the harlots that you are! " LOL

As for divination... Dreams were a big thing. This is a common way that Netjeru and Akhu would communicate with you.

It usually will take some time. I think I waited a week or two.

Have you made an account with their forum? You can ask there and talk to everyone! (You'll need an account anyway, so you might want to make one)

Both of you will get in. Don't. Worry. Lol.

I tried to make an account, but it wouldn't let me. Kept on saying that my password wasn't alphanumeric (although it was). It was soooo frusterating!

Just to ask, i signed up for the class a few months ago, and i know i was accepted, but i thought it was meant to start on the 20th May and i haven't received anything by e-mail (it is being done by e-mail, isn't it) or do i have to go to a site and sign in somewhere.

Or am i wrong about the date?.

Thanks :).

David, you should have recieved tons of letters from the Nisut with messages, welcomes and instructions for what to do and how everything will happen plus all the lessons (they're 10, one for each week). It's all by email and flash chat. If you haven't recieved any of that email the Nisut (or any of them) and ask what happened. If you don't stay on the ball with things and don't get the emails then you might have jsut been thought to be absent. You might be able to get into the next one. Just email and ask!

Hullo....

(Long-time lurker, just coming out of the wallpaper to say this...)

Hey David19! The reason I'm posting is because that happened to me... somehow I got accidentally dropped from the mailing list, but it got fixed very quickly...

Just write an email to the Kai-Imakhu who sent your confirmation email. (The Nisut is very busy and sometimes it takes quite a while for Her to respond to emails.)

Um yeah... hi everybody! (A lot of you know me already.)

Senebty,
Kheret

I've e-mailed the person who said i was in, but that was Friday (or Thursday) and i haven't heard anything back, do you think i should e-mail again or will it just take awhile to get back to me, or should i reapply or something?.

Thanks.

Hotep,

Shemsu are taught fedw by the Nisut. One uses four sticks to answer yes or no questions as well as give general readings, depending on how the sticks fall. One is getting the answer from one's Parent Netjer/t, or if one is dual-Parented, one asks Hemet Who would be best to ask. For example, if I were to throw Fedw for you, the answers would come from Amun-Ra. Some Netjeru are picky about certain things with Fedw, however; Amun-Ra always wants something other than the offering of cool water to give an answer, and I can't divine for myself because He won't answer me straight up, only when I am throwing for someone else. (Perhaps He wants an even bigger offering? I don't know).

There are other forms of divination that the Imakhu use, but I am not familiar with them.

Members of the House of Netjer may undergo the rite of parent divination, if they wish to. Shells are thrown, and how they land tells how many parents and beloveds one has, and then more throws are done to find out Who exactly they are. Alsom the rite begins with messages from your ancestors.
I had mine done through the chat room, because I am not near the main temple. Some people know who their parent(s) is before they get divined, I know I did. :)

Thanks Duwayitheru for the info. My husband has been slowly getting into Kemet and feels very connected to Anubis but doesn't know why. I mentioned the House of Netjer classes to him but he would hardly have time to do them. I told him the more he reads about Kemet the more he should start to understand. I was wondering if he needs to find out who his parents are.

(Last post for now till we get back next week but I'll check back in here then.)
