To me, it doesn't really matter. even if it'd be real we'd be inclined to believe it was fake until we had it proven 100% otherwise... so. Whatever it might be to someone, let it be so. Mermaid or not... I say cool. I'd still LIKE to think mermaids loos somewhat like Ariel from the Disney cartoon. (Though I know that's impossible) But... yeah... *being a drunken idiot* :D

It doesn't look very realistic to me. It looks more like a fanatical mermaid than what one would percieve as true merfolk.
Yes, I believe in merfolk.

P.T. Barnum. And he was right. lol
Found it :
The entire quote is "There's a sucker born every minute...and two to take 'em." The source of the quote is most likely famous con-man Joseph ("Paper Collar" Joe) Bessimer. Barnum's fellow circus owner and arch-rival Adam Forepaugh attributed the quote to Barnum in a newspaper interview in an attempt to discredit him. However, Barnum never denied making the quote. It is said that he thanked Forepaugh for the free publicity he had given him.

People have been making fake mermaids for hundreds of years and selling them to whoever will buy. There was an article about it in Renaissance magazine a while back. A famous example was passed down in a certain family for years unltil it was proven to be the top halp of a monkey attached to the back half of a giant salmon.

Did anyone notice the outrageous price some one paid?
Uh, yeah. About $1,750!
The first bid was $2.00. Heh.
I think it's all a hoax. It's a good piece of work...or art...or whatever it is.
Someone mentioned no birds or bugs on it-- totally. I've been on beaches, anything dead/dying/decaying-- things are all over it. And it smells.
Plus it wouldn't look that well perserved if it was from a wet enviroment, it'd have to be in a desert to look the way it did.
Total fake. Looks like some well made prop for a movie or something.
This person just sells weird things--

The guy is a taxidermist.. look at some of his old auctions.. he also buys things like baboon skulls to use in his creations.
These things are actually pretty easy to make. manipulate the flesh, add skulls or other bones (either resin or real) and don't use stitches to close the seams.. use superglue or something similar.. then dry them.. the skin will shrink to fit around the bones or padding/forms... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1468&item=300005222465
This one even states: "Her skin and fin are authentic once living fish flesh."

i agree that it is fake, it would be cool if it were real though. even if it ment that merfolk looked like that.
as for the end bid, i dont htink its really that much for something of that quality of workmanship, and size.
did you see the auction tht was posted in just silly, about a "stich" doll from lelo and stich, that was supposidly haunted. that auction got up to like $11,100
http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=118720&highlight=haunted+doll
link to the thread
http://www.tongs.org.uk/wiki.pl?HauntedStitchDoll
link to the site. the auction is long over by now but they have posted the sellers and bidders comments for us all to see.
i tried to find an outcome from the buyer, to see if it really was haunted or not but i couldnt find anything. i would have loved to know what happend after.
however it was an entertaining read thats for sure. the page side scrolls, you can copy paste it in a word doc for easier reading.

I think mermaids are real, but they are ethereal. You won't find a dead one lying around. That thing is plastic, look at the face.

wouldn't it be blown up or bloated like a pig? Wouldn't there be discoloration and evidence of fishies nibbling at it??? Missing scales? signs of impact with what ever killed it? nothing dead looks that good...believe me, as an animal rescuer and rehabilitator....most living animals I deal with look more banged up than this 'dead 'think...
i think i can smell the foam rubber from here.

lol i looked at his ebay history (since it didnt have anything current listed to sell)
all the buyers gave him green ratings, and ALL of the sea creatures are listed as found on a beach in florida, and one item (i guess he had 2 of them) was sold 2 times, with the same pics.
you would think that this guy would change his story, although some of the comments were nice work, ect

you can narrow the search to people who bought from him only. thats what i looked at, then i looked at the stuff he bought (some stuff was interesting including a human skull) i was looking to see if he bought any of those items from someone else and sold them for a higher price.
