I have no tips to offer but I'm hoping some of you might! I know there are many in the empathic bunker thread but that thread is 2000+ posts strong and overwhelming to the newbie.
So share and spread the knowledge.
I've heard of making an emotional shield but I wouldn't know the first place to begin with that.

Learn how to shield, and shield effectively.
Develop your own personal techniques - because these will be your most effective.
Learn when to shield - some people don't have to do it all the time.
Learn how to differentiate between your feelings, and the feelings of others.
Learn how to control and monitor your emotions - this will save you a lot of future headaches.
Learn to decompress at the end of the day - don't let those feelings build up without an outlet.

I've heard of making an emotional shield but I wouldn't know the first place to begin with that.
It is essentially mental blocking.
My first shield was a brick wall. To make it effective, I started out by building it brick by brick each day - eventually, I could picture the wall, and it was there- no need to waste time on construction. ;) Shielding is basically mind over matter - you are protecting yourself (thus the term shielding) from absorbing the emotions and energies that others are projecting.
So, start with something that is easy for you to construct, and something that you can use to "bounce" the emotions off of.
You imagine your shield protecting you - mind, body, spirit.
Hope that helps.
I believe there is or was a class in the COT on shielding, so you might look for that. :)

I try to spend at least one morning a week doing Tai Chi and meditating--either in silence or with relaxing music. This helps me drain all of the crap out of my system.
