I think you mean auras.
Many people don't see them in colours. They see them as white but with different textures. I can't explain how to see them though, I'm sorry. I've never actually thought about it.
Google is my friend, so here's a link!

Agreeing with Mouse.
Oras exist too:
o·ra (ôr'ə)
n., pl. o·rae (ôr'ē).
An edge or margin.

i used to be able to see them... i saw them in colors... i would focus on the person for a short moment, i generally tried to look at their hand, or some sort of skin that was showing, i don't like looking at faces, because i feel i might be making judgements based on expressions, etc., and any clothed part was no good, because of the colors going on there... i haven't really tried in a while though... i used to read peoples aura colors in Jr. High. normally after staring for a few seconds, i would see a glow around the person... again, i haven't done it in a long time, its something i had to consciously do, not like i could just walk around and see everyones colors... i'll have to try again sometime, see if i can still do it...

I 'feel' or 'sense' auras more than I see them physically.
Although I can make out that waver of energy or a haze surrounding plants, animals and people. *shrugs* different strokes for different folks.
Take a look through the circle of teaching section I believe we've run classes on Auras before. *smiles*
Brightest Blessings,
and have fun researching.

I've never been able to see auras very well. Really there are only a handful of instances where I've seen them at all. The professor for a Native Americans of Indiana class I took had a really bright aura which even I had no trouble seeing. One of my friends in the class mentioned afterward that the prof had a really nice aura, so I know I wasn't the only one. It could be that the dark room and molted light of the projector played visual tricks on us. It did have kind of a greenish cast though.
When I walk at night I can see a kind of reverse shadow of light on the ground in the general outline of my body. I've always assumed it was an aura but its totally possible that it's just my eyes trying to cope with the lack of light.

I only see them on dead people... Some dead people are highly overrated, I assure you. And not so good at conversing.
I feel them all the time, but sometimes I see them, its kinda a glow, usually in colours.

Hi tyro, I'm just going to give you a BS warning about aura exorcises. Let's just say I'm glad I took a psychology course before I got into paganism. This is a post I made in response to a discussion on seeing auras on Deo's Shadow (http://www.deos-shadow.com/index.php?id=41):
I took a psychology course while I was in college - I loved it! And my teacher did discuss the "shadow impressions" that are left when you stare at something long enough. The pattern of an object gets burned into whatever the back of your eye is called - retina? (I'm sooo technical!), so that when you look at a blank wall you can still see the outline of an object. This is supposed to be easier to do for children than for adults. This was before I got into paganism. Later on, I read articles, as well as had a friend try to teach me how to see auras - and what did both say? To use the outline technique from my psychology class! It's a fraud! When people see colours with this technique it is really the opposing colour of the object you were staring at (took art for years too). If you look at a green object for a long time and then look at a blank white wall, the outline of the object will be red. Same for blue and orange, purple and yellow etc... While I do believe that some people can see or feel auras or energy fields around others, I do not think that it is ethical to teach the above technique - it gives a false impression to the student that they are actually seeing an aura.

Erm, no. It isn't a fraud. It is that same edge we see. The term "ora" is in the dictionary: margin, edge.
The explanation of "retinal after-image" is partially correct. There's more to it than that, though. Quite recently, like two or three months ago, biologists found that all living tissue emits light. Just a small amount, but enough to pick up with sensitive instruments.
They claimed that our eyes aren't sensitive enough to see that light... and that's the part where auras come in: those who can see auras and the colours in them, might just be sensitive enough to actually see that light. A hypothesis that certainly deserves further study.
Of course your teacher couldn't have known that at the time. We learn new things every day.

I remember this coming out in the news a little while back. Let me see if I can dig up an article about it.
Okay, got one.
Mitsuo Hiramatsu, a scientist at the Central Research Laboratory at Hamamatsu Photonics in Japan, who led the research, told Discovery News that the hands are not the only parts of the body that shine light by releasing photons, or tiny, energized increments of light.
"Not only the hands, but also the forehead and bottoms of our feet emit photons," Hiramatsu said, and added that in terms of hands "the presence of photons means that our hands are producing light all of the time."
