A friend has told me that this is his path. Can anyone shed any light on this? To me, it does look quite complicated. Maybe a simple overview? Thanks.

The Rosicrucians are an Hermetic order of Esoteric Christians, as is my understanding. For a complete overview of Rosicrucianism, check out Manly P. Hall's classic text The Secret Teachings of All Ages.
I don't personally know too much about them, other than the fact that the Rosy-Cross they take their name from is a symbol of heterosexual sexual intercourse (or, at least, to Crowley, Thelema, and the Golden Dawn, it is). I met a Rosicrucian in Thailand once, and she was a really cool lady.
Oh, one more thing that I know about them is that the original Rosicrucians of the 17th century are thought by some to have been a literary hoax.

I had a chance to talk with some rosicrucians recently who set up a branch of the order in my country. I guess you can read up about their history.... so I'll give you a man-on-the-street view of things.
Basically, when a person signs up for membership with them, he will receive gradual instruction over the period of years.....totalling about 5 years or so in the basic beliefs of the order. The person will be given an introduction and starts out as a neophyte..... he will have to go through an introductory course, 3 Atriums (sorta like fundementals) and 9 temple degrees.....(that's the end of the 5 year period) after which, he will be considered..... truly "part of the order"............. at least that is what I get from talking to the members and reading their advertising.
Although the Rosicrucians in my country do not advertise themselves as a hermetic order..... mostly for fear of the negative reaction that they might get when people hear things like hermetic, magic... etc... they do actually teach the basic fundementals of how energy, symbolism and magic works in their 5 year course.... albeit somewhat disguised as some kind of very sophisticated psychology or method of thinking..... ha ha.....
No kidding, this was actually what I was told when I spoke with one of their representives. I did flat-out ask if they did magic, and there was quite a pause before they answered......However, most members of the order appear fairly intellectual and rather friendly. I guess this order would appeal to someone who likes to take a well-compartmentalised, highly-scholastic approach to spirituality.

There is a simular group in California called Astara that I belong to. They use the Lotus instead of the Rose as a sign, but are basicly the same teachings. Astarian lessons run about $14.oo,each. I have an old book or two from the Rosicutians.
