View Full Version : How many people use the term 'Witch' for themselves?

Several years ago, I thought so thrilled at the idea of having enough knowlege and experience to call myself a Witch. But I find that so many people misunderstand the term, I thought I'd ask the question, what does it even MEAN to be a witch? I can do runes, I can read tarrot to some extent, I'm an empath, but have only a little bit of herbal experience, and am very unpicky with my magickal procedures/setup, so does this even make me one?

Should I even WANT to call myself one, considering the overwhleming awe it inspires in people who know absolutely nothing about the term, and they think I can do stuff for them and make it come true all the time like something out of a Tolkien novel?

Anyways, I thought I'd just start naming myself one, even if it does generate a slight awe inspiring rush among some people (which feels pretty cool to be honest), still probably more true than saying I wasn't. I mean, how many non-witches turn their friends into a cork, and tie them from a thread to keep them safe when they're not with you i wonder? heh.

I don't. there are those that argue that "Witch" is an appropriate label for me, but there is somehtign about the word and what it brings to mind- that I've never quite been able to explain to anyone else, mosly regarding my view of magic and what it is- that makes me say it isn't the right word. It's certainly not a bad/negtive word, but it's just not me.

I've never really been confortable with the term Witch, even when I did practice witchcraft on a regular basis. Beats me as to why. I wasn't raised with any misconceptions or stereotypes to explain the prejudice. *shrugs*

I refer to myself as a witch.. that doesn't mean I've crumpled any one's balls with an evil hex or anything... I believe 'witch' is a term for any person in touch with their non-linear (rational) skills/knowledge...

for me that means a certain level of prescience, a strong creative ability and an inate compresension of the needs/moods/attitudes of animals and plants...

So yes I do have magic, but it is subtle.... I'm a good gardener,a respected poet, animals come to me and trust me, and I trust my intuition (which is generally right on the money)...

I started off using the terms "Wiccan" and "Witch" interchangeably, but then as the "I'm not a Wiccan, I'm a WITCH" crowd grew more vocal, I decided I preferred the label "Wiccan". Since I rarely ever practice witchcraft or magic, but instead focus on the religious side of things, Wiccan seemed more apt.

RainInanna
January 10th, 2007, 10:25 PM
Conversely I used to separate the two terms quite strongly, until I realized through my readings (and especially through a post of Ben G's) that they had for a long time been synonymous. I stopped "needing" to separate them even though I can certainly respect when and why others do. I still waffle on whether they are or are not, and recently have called myself "Wiccan inspired Witch".

Now I'm more likely to call myself "Wiccan inspired Pagan" with the idea that all Wiccans are Witches. YMMV.

Nadezhda
January 11th, 2007, 02:26 AM
I'm in the 'other' category!

I've been a witch for a long time. I used to be Wiccan, then Pagan, and am now almost-converted to Kemetic Orthodoxy, where the system of 'magic' is ingrained withing the religion itself.

I'm also part of the "Not all Wiccans are Witches, and most Witches are not Wiccans, the terms are NOT interchangeable, thanks" movement. Labels in themselves can be convenient, but it's hard enough to use them without having them misused all the time.

Here's my opinion on this all. Naming things or people has to do simply with the ego. To me, it seems like people often label themselves for esteem or prestige... driven by the ego, as ridiculous as that may seem. My second reason for not labeling myself is because I DO view it as an esteem issue. I don't feel worthy of calling myself a Druid or Shaman.. because obviously I don't have enough experience in the path, or life alone! I've only been on "the path" for about five to six years, and even though i've done a tremendous amount of work and can identify over a hundred trees and plants both here at school in SC and at home in the northeast.. I don't feel experienced. There is so much out there in the world, and I would be terribly embarassed if someone were to "Quiz" me on something and I could not procure an answer. Personally, I'm not attached to labels much, and call myself neither pagan nor a witch. There is so much profound wisdom in eastern traditions, Christianity, pagan faiths and so on. I usually like to pick and choose, broading my horizons in all possible areas. If people DO ask what "religion" I am, I usually say i'm born Christian but now follow a path similar to the ancient Pagan faiths of Europe. Usually I follow up telling people I'm a pantheist, because from my personal interactions with nature, every stone and leaf has a tremendous story to tell, and that is divine in its own right.

While this can be true of some, I certainly don't think it's true of all.

I myself use labels to facilitate the communication of ideas, nothing more.

I'm a Shaman, and that's a label I've recently accepted because it's what others have bestowed on me. But you know what? It doesn't make me feel special, it makes me feel trepidation and weariness because to be such is WORK. LOTS of work. Worthy or not, this is my path and it is my task.

How is labeling oneself doing so for esteem or prestige? When I call myself an Australian, does that mean I'm doing it to boost my self esteem?

I think people are mistaken to what "labels" really are. They are a means of communication, a simple explanation to what a person really is. My name is Dianne, but that isn't anything to do with prestige or ego. Its just my name. Just like saying I'm a witch. Being one doesn't limit a person.

Labels are subjective, and can mean different things to different people. Keeping that in mind, I do call myself a witch, though I may not fit the definition as put out there by others. I consider myself a witch because I practice magic, but it's a different kind of magic. I don't do rituals very often, and when I do, they are mostly for the intent of focusing my own energies. I don't curse people or heal people or turn my friends into corks. (a fun idea though, Aquarian Moon ;) What I do is recognize the simple magic of life, in my gardening and household chores, in my painting and writing, in my interactions with people, in how I move through the world, and generally everything I do. By recognizing that fact and striving to live a certain way, I consider myself a practitioner of magic. Thus, a witch.
I don't use that label to describe myself to everyone, because of the many definitions of witch. I first describe what I believe and what I do, then try to tag a label on that. It's hard to find one appropriate label for everything I believe, but the closest I've come so far is Eclectic Irish-Celtic-Inspired Green Kitchen Witch. Rather complicated, I know. :hahugh:

i generally call my self witch or pagan, when asked what religon i am on boards i say that i am a pagan who currently practices with a wiccan coven, and that i am a witch,

im still in the air about if i am a wiccan or not, however no matter how i say it i still get funny looks (when it is in real life that is)

i still am not comfortable saying what i am at work, considering i work with alot of christian types. however when i explained why i wore the necklace i do (its a labrordite) the guy said wow we all need one of those (i work selling tires and batteries, and the necklace turns negative energies in to positive ones) i might go and get me a bigger stone to use as a "paper weight" and put it on the desk area ehehehe.

When ever the occasion arises - I too call myself a Witch (and yes I am a man!:) ) Naturally, when I make this statement I get the usual funny looks and comments such as "Wheres your broomstick" *yawn* but I also refer to myself as Wiccan more than Pagan - for some reason this gets a more puzzled look and provides a temporary hole in the conversation! Plenty of time for me to explain!

I dont need to do that as often anymore, mainly because people I know generally know what i'm all about. In the same breath "Fiddlesticks" to what anyone else thinks about me!

Seriously, I call myself pagan or mystic if the subject of religion comes up. If the discussion gets technical enough, I may even use terms like thaumaturgy or pantheism.

Yes, I'm a witch, but I was taught that my craft/religion is best kept private in almost all situations, so I refer to myself as a witch only in very select company. While this approach can seem somewhat stifling at times, I've never been sorry when I kept my mouth shut, but I've frequently wished I'd practiced more discretion when my big mouth landed me more trouble than I'd bargained for. Witches have been persecuted for thousands of years and while we enjoy greater freedom of expression now than ever, it's prudent to remember that there would be no tradition of witchcraft to follow had there not been some "wise ones" who kept there identity to themselves and avoided the stake.

I don't particularly have a problem with the word "Witch" as a label. I don't use it. I rarely have to, if it comes up I say "I practice witchcraft." Does that make me a Witch? Yes, and I don't mind when people use that label to describe me in that context, but "Witch" has a lot of connotations I prefer not to associate myself with. And I mean both the good and the bad here. I don't want to be continually associated with warty green hag, but I don't want to be associated with Wicca either.

Really, I consider myself a Witch as a person who practices witchcraft, but I don't call myself one.

"Witch" is how I think of myself, how I identify with myself. But it is not the word I usually use when speaking with people I do not know very well. Usually, if it comes up in conversation, I refer to myself as "Pagan".

But that is not very often. I'm quite private and do not feel compelled to tell everyone of my path.

But I like the word Witch....I feel the words "witch" and "witchcraft" have a very definite power to them.

I think you should have to have a bit of magical practice/usage of actual witchcraft before referring to oneself as a witch or warlock.

However, one could argue that just casting a spell does not constitute witchcraft. o_O

I am Wiccan and practice Witchcraft. I refer to myself as a Witch on occasion. It really doesn't come up much to call myself anything. My immediate family knows I practice and a few friends so sometimes Witch comes up. I'm not ashamed of it, in fact very content I found this Path. If I am discussing it, I am mostly discussing being Wiccan. If I hear someone discussing 'Witch' in a derogatory way, I correct them. They can either accept my explanation or continue being a fool; no skin off my nose - which is a nice nose not long and humpy with green warts!!

I ware my pentacle pendant openly, and the most common response I get when people actually ask is, "Are you wiccan?" The term "witch" has never been bought up by someone else, but to myself and here online I do refer to myself as a witch. I prefer the more Direct title. You say "wiccan" to someone and they probably think "witch" anyway, though they might not say so out loud to be polite, thinking of it as an insult.

Ive never gotten any requests for spells or anything from people though. For which im glad. I dont think I know how to do things for other people. I cant even do tarrot reading for other people. I just dont know how, lol.

I consider myself a witch and I use the term.

I call myself witch (or pagan), simply because to tell them what I really am appears to be too complex for the general public. ..

I am a Wiccan and a Witch. I use both terms because I am both.

I choose not to call myself a witch, only because of the negative associations people tend to have with the term. I live in the woods so there are quite a few people in my area who not the of the most open of mind frames. Also, I do not wish to have a title, because my name might become atrophied from lack of exercise. I personally feel that a title is not and or should not be necessary.

I've always considered myself a witch, nothing else really fit. I'm not Wiccan, Pagan seems too generic, and I don't have three days to explain myself to the general population, so I leave it at that. They can make up their own stories, probably much more grandeur than reality anyway.

yes, because it's a common convention for practitioners of my faith. I don't have any particular feelings about the title.

Originally, I thought I was a "witch-in-training" but I decided, that even though I was still Pagan, I wasn't a witch because what I do isn't truly witchcraft. What I do is a combination of psionics, magecraft, sigils, and intrinsic magick.

I refer to myself these days as a Mage and a Psion. And also as a Pagan.

I also call myself Otherkin (wood elf), Therian (cat, fox, wolf), Phoenix, and Vampire.

Anyhow, I guess all I'm saying is I'm no Witch.

I usually cal myself a Heathen ": an unconverted member of a people or nation that does not acknowledge the God of the Bible, A person who does not hold Christian beliefs" As I feel that most accurately describes myself and my lineage. Not everyone in my family could be called a witch but most of them fall/fell into the 'heathen' category. There are so many pathways that are recognized now, if there is such a thing out there as a Shamanistic Witch I would call myself that. But for now I think it would just confuse people. Heathen is simple.

Yeah, I call myself a witch. Also, I see being a witch & my religious preferences as separate things, so I don't have a problem with it.

I voted "depends." I celebrate something I call the Sabbath, and I do rather enjoy dancing backwards. Does that count? :toofless:

Yes, but what would you write down under the "religion" question if you were filling out a form at a hospital? I was there once and along with the usual choices they had "Other". I told the nurse that none of them applied to me because I wasn't any of the usual ones and I wasn't an "Other". She said it's have to take it up with the hospital administration. So I did.

It took a long time and a lot of letters and phone calls and meetings but now the hospital form also has a category of "Pagan". Gotta love the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

...The immeadiate in-laws (his bro, sis, sis-in-law) know I'm
a witch. I wear my pentacle out where people can see it, I
figure they can look away if they don't like it.
Most the time I refer to myself as Pagan in public.

I am a Witch. :) I feel it has always described who I am and what I do, so I feela very strong connection to the term. Of course, where I live I would never tell anyone that. :sigh: One day no one will have to hide in the shadows.

I'm a practicing Witch, not Wiccan, and fan of Laurie Cabot. Let's just hope no one comes here and snaps at me for liking her.

I do, but not always. When I do it's because it's a recognizable label. There are several other labels I consider more "fitting," but I rarely get the opportunity to use them.
