I'm wondering if there is any information on a relationship between the egyptian sun disks and halo's depicted in many religions.

Now I've always wondered about this along with the "Sun God" relationship to the "son of God" concept because Egyptians worshiped the sun and wearing sun disks on the head was clearly depicted in temple carvings. Did other traditions adapt beliefs from the egyptian traditions?

I came across this site randomly http://journals.aol.com/sazzylilsmartazz/TheConscientiousObjector/entries/2005/07/31/the-sun-and-the-halo-/390

anybody have information to share on this subject?

Well, actually... it happened pretty independently around the world. Because the Sun is seen as a lie giver, and is the most important sphere apart from the earth... the halo became an important symbol for divinity. In East Asia for example you see a very classic example of halos and light being found near the figure's heads... partly because of the idea of the chakra system... but also because of figures having the sun directly behind them signifying divinity, but also light. Light eqaulling power, good, life. You see the sun as a divinity too in the Americas. Now whether or not the monotheistic religions that use Halos in their iconography adapted the use of other culture's art to themselves, or just picked up on a recognizeable trend is really up to debate. But I disagree that cultures exclusivly took it from ancient Egypt. becasue really if you look at the figures of the Egyptian gods... they don't have Halos. there are powerful figures of sundiscs... but the figures themselves for the most part do not have halos around their heads.

Good link btw, its shows a little bit :).
