hi all!

i had a thought recently. given the various traditions of rewards for good/diligent spinners and punishment for bad/lazy spinners around midwinter, what would a modern equivalent of spinning be?

I embroider, I use that as my spinning.

it would still be spinning............

there are quite a few in the northeast heathen community here who not only do it, but teach it.

well, true, but spinning today is more of a hobby than a task which, if left undone, will eventually leave your family walking around dressed in rags.

what exactly is this "spinning"? does that mean sewing garb for your kin?

at the time the lore was written down, it meant making the thread with which to weave the cloth with which one would eventually sew garments for one's kin.

Your right, it's almost ....I hate to say the word....obsolete. _inabox_

My mistake, I thought you wanted to know what today's "calling it" was known as.

I've been following this thread, trying myself to think of a modern equivalent to spinning, hoping someone else will.

Post-Modern Industrialized people really don't do anything wholly by themselves---it's a spooky realization.

The only thing I can think of that is any bit the same is house maintenance.

Very unsatisfactory.

it is creepy, isn't it?

i guess martha stewart will be the only one getting rewards any time soon.

maybe keeping a job might be sort-of equivalent?

See, that's what I was thinkin'... maintaining the means to clothe your family...

so something along the lines of maintaining/contributing to household finances.

But holding down a job is a much larger enterprise than 'clothing your family' and soooooooo less specific.

I'm not satisfied.
It also needs to be something mindlessly repetitive.......maybe working does apply!

Mindlessly repetitive? Laundry for a big family comes to mind. Never-ending piles of laundry. Spin-cycle. Ironing. Folding.

I'm only half joking. ;)

I think laundry is a good idea----particularly if it involves mending as well!

Did I post the poem to the Goddess of Lost Socks before, Banon?

oh, i'm so screwed if it's laundry!

i don't think i've seen that poem before.

Thou, O Goddess of Lost Socks,
I bring to you my grievances.
Thou, Arbiter of Small Shocks,
Guard me from vast evil chances.
Little troubles come in large flocks;
You see them coming in advance.
Sail me off the jagged rocks;
Twirl me in life's loony dances.

I offer You my own footwear,
As a trade for worser things.
Take them--save me from despair--
From the sorrow real loss brings.
Let me be all unaware,
While I fix the dents and dings,
Of the worse fates You repair
With the inconveniences you bring.

Goddess! Show me, on reflection,
That my socks bring Your affection.

I'm thinking more and more that laundry would substitute for weaving:
It's a repetitive chore
You and your family would be unclothed if you didn't do it
It's home-based

Liking it!
