on this day in 1970, thanks to the forsight of Senator Nelson (D-Wisc.), the first 'Earth Day' was celebrated.
as well as being responsible for raising environmental awareness for an entire generation, the following groundswell helped pressure the Nixon administration into establishing the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).
however the current administration is doing all it can to strip the EPA of any real power, stifling it's ability to pressure the giant corporate polluters to comply with Federal law.
i encourage any and all who care about the environment to become active in whatever way you can. letters to your local politicians really DO help, especially during an election year!
