Men would travel to Delphi to ask the Phythia, oracle for Apollo, important questions. Remember that the oracle would give men important advice in times of war. For example, when the Greeks needed advice on how to defeat the Persians during the Persian War, they asked the oracle. The advice: build a wooden wall. The Greeks realized that the "wooden wall" was actually to build up their navy which was composed of wooden ships. Today, scholars are suggesting that the oracle was able to come up with these oracles, because she was inhaling intoxicating fumes. Here is one article that supports this idea.
