On May 1'st Discovery Channel presents a program on Jack the Ripper..new evidence about this gruesome historical murderer.
May 1st at 9 pm, Midnight,
and May 4th at 4 pm.
I'm looking foward to this one. Jack The Ripper is one charachter who has always fascinated me, much to my dismay.
I remember watching a corny movie called "Bridge Across Time" when I was a kid, about Jack the Ripper coming back to wreak havock in modern times. I was so frightened, I had nightmares for weeks!

was that the one where Jack's spirit was moved to Arizona when London Bridge was rebuilt in Lake Havasu? i remember that one.
Saucy Jack has always fascinated me too. i have a number of videos recorded with material about the events of late 1888. and some of the theories are delicious (if not terribly plausible).
thanks, i'll be sure to check this out.
(good Beltane fair, huh?)

LOL..yep..that's the movie!
Is your theory that he was actually the prince? that was my theory...

that Victoria's son Prince Edward (later King Edward VII) was the Ripper is perhaps the most intriguing theory, and the basis of the Sherlock Holmes novel (and movie) "Murder By Decree".
but i don't think it actually was Edward.
i can't remember his name right now, but he was a Polish Jew whom the police were showing quite a bit of interest in. he apparently went mad (duh!), and committed suicide by jumping to his death from London Bridge. the murders stopped immediately after.
btw, there is also another Sherlock Holmes novel called "The Last Sherlock Holmes Story", in which Watson discovers (much to his chagrin!) that the Ripper was in fact... no, i just can't say it!

Did anyone see where the mystery author Patricia Cornwell thinks she knows who Jack the Ripper really was? I think it was Primetime that had the show on a few months back. Patricia Cornwell is a former forensic scientist and she thinks it was some painter. She has spent 10 years trying to figure this out. She has bought countless paintings by this guy. His name escapes me at the moment. Anyway, she has taken paintings of his apart. Some of them worth millions. His paintings were pretty dark and gruesome and some of the things in his paintings mirror Jack's killings. Even up to things that the police never told the public. It was a pretty cool show.

If you remember the name of the artist, let me know.

Just watched the documentary. Seems you are right, Greenman. The best lead as to who Jack was, was a man by the name of kominski...a Polish Jew. I will write more about it later.

I found it!! Patricia Cornwell thinks that Walter Richard Sickert, an artist, was Jack the Ripper. Here is the story that Primetime did about it. http://abcnews.go.com/sections/primetime/DailyNews/pt_ripper_011206.html

Ok..this is what I gathered from the show.
During the investigation, a columnist wrote about someone they thought was the perpetrator. A leading detective wrote a reply to the article, saying there were three main suspects, none of which were the ones the columnist mentioned. One of the ones the detective cited, was this polish jew, kominski. Who had a very deep hatred of women, and a murderous nature. Kominski was brought in for questioning, and was given over to the care of his brother. After the last murder. From then on, police followed every move kominski made, not taking their eye off of him for a minute. Then, Kominski was sent to a mental health hospital, and from then on, there was never a "ripping" again. Makes a pretty good case.

yeah Kominski, that was the name. i knew it began with a K.
and Lady Blayd, i remember Sickert's name being discussed too, although i didn't know that such intricate details were hidden in his paintings.
hummm...

Ooooh, I'm fascinated by Jack the Ripper as well! :)
I did see From Hell and enjoyed it's take on the mystery. Plus Johnny Depp *sigh*
For some reason, I like to think it was the prince, even though I believe that theory's been largely discounted.

Weird - I just saw a show about JTR.
I can't remember his name, but there's a doctor some people suspect was the most likely culprit. Apparently, wherever he went prostitutes were murdered, and as soon as he left the killings stopped. And being a doctor, he would have been familiar with human anatomy...:hmmmmm:

While I love Jack the Ripper (I mean c'mon, he's the Father of All Serial Killers), I don't want to know his identity or who they think it is. Keeps the Mysterious flavor.
