In spite of the fact that more than 90 percent of Americans say they believe in God, only a tiny portion of them knows a thing about religion. When he began teaching college 17 years ago, Prothero writes, he discovered that few of his students could name the authors of the Christian Gospels. Fewer could name a single Hindu Scripture. Almost no one could name the first five books of the Hebrew Bible.

Well, I am not sure that he should generalize, since a great deal of people are starting to read. We just need some catching up.
He could probably start off by not insulting people outright, but take a look in the mirror and discuss with his all knowing intellectual self just how bright he REALLY is.

So what?
A great deal of people(well, not so many as before) come in here citing quotes that don't exist to prove their point, or take things out of context, or look things up in wickpedia as though is was gospel. Just to prove their small appendage large ego issues.
Then there are those of us who get called names because, even though we know the material and the subject, we don't have the need to prove it. Like banging your head up against a wall.
Personally, I don't care either, but I am well read, and this person just really is one of those statistic guys.

Spiritual <> Religious
This just proves what we already know.

I think he's right, but not just for Americans. I'm pretty sure most of the people in this world are woefully ignorant about religion.
