Richard Dawkins... What to say about Dawkins?

It's not that I believe he's wrong in what he says, I can understand where he's coming from, but it's his delivery that I find so hilarious.

He comes across as arrogant and as set in his ways as the very religious people he's ranting about.

I am enjoying the lectures. I thought if there was someone, who had not had the chance to see him, they might, at least, want to see the man who caused all the hub-bub and hear what he is about.

Seems appropriate for non-theists.

WOW! I am learning some biology that I didn't know! I don't think the science was known when I went to school so they couldn't possibly teach it to me in the way back years. Dang!

I'm not discounting what he says, he does make some sense when he's not being all vitriolic and dogmatic.

I'm just one of those people who finds solace in both science and religion/spirituality. I see no reason for one to overpower the other. They both bring their merits and flaws.

I was merely commenting on Dawkins' delivery and how it makes him seem as bad as the religious people he's ranting about.

Yeah.

Well, he isn't ranting in the lecture that I am watching right now. I am really finding it pretty educational and very interesting. I guess, he doesn't rant all the time which I supose is a very good thing for his blood pressure.

Richard Dawkins from Family Feud?

Dawkins is an outspoken atheist, secular humanist, and sceptic, and is a prominent member of the Brights movement. In a play on Thomas Huxley's epithet "Darwin's bulldog", Dawkins' impassioned advocacy of evolution has earned him the appellation "Darwin's rottweiler".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_DawkinsVery interesting guy.

He is a spokesperson of heroic proportions to many Atheists who I think sleep with his books under their pillows.

If you've seen any of his documentaries, you'll know that he does indeed rant. I admire his passion for his cause, but I do wonder if it's getting in the way of his message sometimes.

That sounds interesting. I will find some of his documentaries and post them so we can all discuss them. Give me a bit, OK?

As you wish. His documentary "The Root Of All Evil?" was recently shown here, which is why it's in the forefront of my mind right now.

I'm fascinated by this interplay between science and religion, and how they both anatagonise each other. Each side has its own fanatics.

I watching the waking up in the universe series.

I did enjoy it. I love science.

But I don't feel the non-physical perspectives can be quite that easily dismissed.
When he did that thing with the penny, that didn't explain a lot of known, unanswerable happens. Its easy to say its just chance. It easy to say science is just chance to when they haven't yet proven a theory. :)

I like to give science time to catch up with some spiritual or paranormal type perspectives. :)

As soon as I can take the time some more, I will be watching more!

Thanks Ssanf, this is fun and neat!!

Thanks Ssanf, this is fun and neat!!I agree. But, this is the non-theistic forum. So, Dawkins dismissal of paranormal seems to fit with the Atheism and so forth.

I am watching it all this evening, I hope. I am finding it fascinating so far.

I am watching it full screen so it shows just like on TV! The break every 10 minutes tp go to the next video feels like comercial pauses. LOL!

Deity or should I say non-deity perspectives doesn't have anything to do with things like esp or clairvoyance. What he described, the thinking of a person and then they call, that's isn't necessarily religion at work. Esp could be said to be responsible.

I do agree with his dismissal of things like religion to a point.

Since he dismissed the religious beliefs this is definitely the right forum.

But paranormal possibilities shouldn't be tossed out that effortlessly, IMO, as he did in the videos.
The paranormal has its own physical science trying hard to prove some of the things we know but cant explain.

Right! There are so many things that we don't know about how the brain works, yet.

I watched the whole thing. I loved the ways he used visual aids to keep it interesting.

He reminds me of a bad motiational speaker from the 90's. I always wanted to just smack those jackholes and tell to STFU.

I like the visual aides too. The cell was neat. I like cells. :)

The second set I watched late last night. It was good. :)
His explanations of natural selection I agree with and I like the way he presented it, I just wish he would of been more thorough on the biology and on DNA. I was so hoping for a DNA ancestral trace of the homo species to be shown.
