I got my first pendulum recently and I'm having trouble using it. It's made of Tiger Iron: Tiger's Eye, Hematite, and Red Jasper. Whenever I try to use it, it doesn't move very much... But when my friend used it, he got it to make huge swings! Does anyone have any advice on how to properly use a pendulum? Maybe I'm holding it wrong?
Thanks!

Well, it first would be best to know what exactly he did differently than you if we're truly to be of any help.

I can't use a pendulum at all. Not so good with scrying either.
But I'm simply amazing at tarot, oracle cards, and runes. ;)
Sometimes I have to remind myself not to beat myself up over things that I don't do as well, and remember the things I can do well.

I love Tarot and I'm learning Runes ^^ I thought I might try my hand at pendulums because I see so many ways to use it with Tarot... but >.> I gotta learn how to use it first!

Here is some "how to" information on using a pendulum.

One of these days I'll get around to trying one again. :)

ok a) RELAX! laughs
seriously that is step one
second -- your yes and no directions may be (and probably will be) different then your friends
simply hold the chain/string in your hand letting the weight just hang down
not moving, just hanging
then simply say yes, yes, yes (do NOT ask a question) until you kinda ground some into the word yes and let it show you what a yes will look like for you
then wait stop just hanging there no, no, no, no, no again until you settle into the ONE thing you are asking and that is show me a no
often it is just a matter of calming your energy enough, so that it can understand what you want
when it does not move, that means, not connected, no information, TOO much info
once you learn your yes and no then you can start asking ONE question at a time
be clear on the one question part
for example:
should i quit my job and move to hawaii?
that is TWO questions 1) should i quit my job 2) should i move to hawaii

This is all good advice... however...
You might want to look into getting a different pendulum. I have a few of them, and I spent some time choosing them. I went and held all of the different pendulums at the local shop, and chose the one that seemed the most sensitive to me. If this isn't possible and you still want to try a different one, maybe choose a stone/metal/wood that you feel you is more sensitive to you. Or possibly make one. :)

here is what i did. I made my pendulum with black cord and a nice piece of quartz crystal. Having never scryed with one before I did some reading and this is what I found. Keep it simple like those above me have said. I held the cord loosly in my right and and had my left hand palm up, i dangled the pendulum above that hand, making sure it didnt touch. Making sure that the cord is loose. Now you can start asking it simple questions to make sure that you know your crystal/pendulum and it knows you. You can start by saying or thinking up and down for yes and side to side for no. Then begin asking it very simple questions like your name. This way you know it will be accurate. The main importance is that you keep your fingers loose when holding your cord or chain this will ensure maximum swinging :)

A few additional points or insights as to how I use my pendulums:
1. I've learned that before each use (or before trying a pendulum out in a store before purchase) to cup it in my left hand and focus on cleansing it of other people's or residual energies. This will help it function for you the best that it can - reacting to your energies alone. Imagine how many other people that that same pendulum looked cool and have handled it or even tried using it before you... Sometimes I do this when thinking of buying a particular pendulum I'm drawn to, but then there are few or no positive results that it will ever work to me. This can be caused by a number of reasons - the materials used to make that particular pendulum may not jive with your aura and energies, you may be in entirely the wrong state of mind to be doing pendulum work, or other reasons as well. Just keep that in mind.
2. Be sure you are holding the pendulum in your receiving hand, daggling it over your sending hand. For me this has always been the left (as I am a rightie). I send energy from the right, receive with the left. This can be pretty intuitive as it will feel wrong if you try holding it in the wrong hand...
3. As others above in this thread have suggested, ask the pendulum to show you what a "yes" answer will look like as you work with it. for some this may be a forward/back swing, for others this may be a clockwise circle swing, or some other diagonal swing. Ask the same of what a "no" response will look like. It's important that you understand what each positive or negative response will look like as you work with this pendulum, as they can be different from one to another.
4. If you ask a question, and it seems to be giving you a feeble response (very slight swinging), I've found that I can ask for a more pronounced answer - one that I will not misinterpret. If I do not get one, I may be asking a confusing question or one with many parts that it cannot give me a clear answer on.
5. Before I ask questions, or between each question, it can help to ask the pendulum to "go to station" or show you it's neutral position of just hanging there. This makes it easier for me to focus my questions clearly and to see what the response is to each individual question before I go on to the next... It's easy to jumble quesions together or loose focus s you get rolling with somw answers and responses. Anything I can do to interpret each response clearly and without question I'm willing to give a try!
Different pendulums may work for asking specific types of questions - I have a few that are relatively specific in their usage... My favorites are a silver knotwork cage style pendulum that opens and holds a piece of moldavite inside - and a eye agate pendulum that was my very first experimental pendulum purchase.
Good luck - I hope some of this may be of help or at least food for thought. Take care! :)
