thinking about the pipes got me to thinking about this song.
i think most people are familiar with the tune ("you take the high road and i'll take the low road..."), but the story behind it is very touching. actually there are a few variations of the story, but my favorite is this one...
two very close, life-long friends are in the army together. now tradition says that if a Scotsman dies anywhere in the world, his soul will immediately return to his beloved homeland.
so these to soldiers are in battle, and one of them is mortally wounded. and he sings this song to his friend as he dies, telling him to take the high road, while he himself will take the low road (the underworld) and be back home first.
a sad but beautiful story of the love of friends and home.
