Anyway, yeah..the vandalism sucks...even if it HAD been part of a fertility or beltane celebration, whoever did it should know that the majority of tourists wouldn't understand any such spiritual representation, to begin with. But...such historical landmarks shouldn't be tampered with, period. If it was a part of some ritual, they should have found an empty field, and mowed it in that pattern.

I suspect it was more likely vandalism than ritual. . . or perhaps that's wishful thinking. There are stupid, senseless people in every crowd.
