Okay, I was wondering if there are different Rune sets that do different things or .. what? Are there different kinds of Runes? I mean, do they do different things? I've only heard of Runes, I've never actually used them or anything. I'm considered an extreme newbie to Runes. LoL. Anyways, to further explain my question.. are there Rune sets that are different from others or anything? Do you know what I'm talking about? LoL... hope so. Well, if anyone knows what I'm talking about, it would be appreciated if you explained it to me, thanks everyone!! BB and MP, all! :)

P.S. If I repeated myself many times.. sorry, I just get my thoughts confused when I can't figure something out.

There are 4 major sets of Runes: the Elder (or Germanic) Futhark (24 Runes, used from ?BCE to about 800 CE), the set most commonly used in divination & magic; the Younger (or Norse, or Viking) Futharc (16 Runes, used from about 800 CE to about 1100 CE); the Anglo-Saxon (sometimes called the Frisian) Futhork (29-33 Runes, used from about 750 CE to about 1100 CE); and the Armenen System (18 Runes, 'invented' by Guido Von List around 1900). The Younger & the Anglo-Saxon evolved from the Elder as language needs (that is, 'representation of sounds') evolved. There may be some other very obscure Futharks that might represent very localized usage. The differences lie in the individuals Runes; if a certain Rune isn't contained in a certain Futhark, it is questionable to use it magically with another Futhark, although some will argue that it doesn't matter. All sets can be equally used magically or for divination.

(*Note- F-U-TH-A-R-K is the phonetic value of the first six Runes in the Elder Futhark)

Woo, thanks for all that very interesting information. Very much appreciated! I found a site which I've listed below, it seems quite helpful with Runes and their history. I was wondering if anyone found a site that gives descriptions of the runes and such forth? Anyways, thanks again! :)

site: http://www.tarahill.com/runes/

By the way, anyone know any good books for learning about Runes and their uses?? Thanks!

Check out

http://www.irminsul.org

Click on the "Runes" section; it's linked to many good sites. I think there's also a recommended reading section there (it's a huge site, browse around while you're in there).

You might also want to give the 'search' function here a try (it's located at the very top of the page).
