Names, have you ever wondered the power a name carries? I do not mean the number value but instead the word itself and does it effect the person?

For example here in the states we have a commercial that says hey you can not measure a service by its name -- and they go through the folks in the office that actually have the quality of the name ie:

eileen -- pronounced I Lean -- and she leans on something
joy - she is all giggles and happy

what about names like hope -- does that make a gal have more hope then the next person?

Does the name, even nic-names, imprint a person with what that word means?

For example if you call a person a nic-name over and over of rock star -- will that make them more likely to become one?

Can all of this help you divine what kinda person they already are? just based on the name?

well... I go by Monster... what's that say about me?

I think that sometimes the traditional meaning or origin of a name can carry a lot too.

Aw, but you're an Elmo kind of monster. :D

I think nick-names especially can give a clue as to the type of person someone is, as they were probably given the nick-name for a reason! :)

As for the Eileen & Joy things mentioned above... I"ll have to think about that and see if it makes some sense when I look at people I know. It'll be a new way of getting to know them!

I once did some stuff with trying to figure out my friends by doing the hebrew letters of their name / qaballah. That was an interesting exercise as well. :)

I am not sure about given names but I do think nicknames and magical names can be quite telling.

For example, some of my nicknames have been Blaster, Ice and TNT. So what does that say about me?

My screen name is a holdover from a lovely grove I belonged to and came to me in meditation/dream but it also says something about me. Funny thing is, the characteristics that spawned the nicknames and the screen name are characteristics that are well-hidden, or perhaps I should say "controlled". Which in turn is also how some of the nicknames came about.

What about the mother that calls her little girl "my mistake" or "mommies little mistake"

the child is too little to know what that means (or are they?) does that imprint anything in that person?

does it depend on what the word means to the context people are using it

for example if my friends called me fat - yet my daughters friends called her phat

would it tell you something about my daughter to hear her called phat?

is there really that much energy in words and names? that much power?

and isn't divination reading energy?

things that make ya go hmmm

My given name (first middle and last) means White One Who is Like God and Friend of the Sea.

Nicknames.... Husband calls me Sweet Pea (even now, when we are separated he still calls me this!)

Other than that, I've never really had nicknames.

Yep, there is that much power in the spoken word. Words are thoughts manifested.

"Rick" is generally accepted as the Anglicized nickname for Richard (from the French: basically, brave, fearless), but it is actually older than that. It goes back to the German -rik (ex: Rodrik, Ulfrik), and means "chieftain, brave leader." A rick is also a certain measure of stacked firewood.

Am I a leader (fearless or otherwise)? Not on purpose, but it does seem that a number of people look to me to fill that role. Do I give full measure? Well, I usually try to.

Writing a name in runes, then translating their meanings is always interesting, & most often gives an accurate insight into the name-wearer.

Aside to TWM: more like a cookie monster... http://bestsmileys.com/eating1/23.gif

What about the mother that calls her little girl "my mistake" or "mommies little mistake"That reminds me of the commercial for a cruise line. I think it was Disney. The little girl goes on & on about a cruise they'd taken a year ago, then says something like "And this is my little brother Jack, but mommy calls him her little souvenir". LOL

Love that one.

Words have an extreme effect on our self-esteem. Especially when coming from parents & other authority figures when we are young. If you are consistently called stupid, fat, a mistake, etc. I've got to think that those qualities will somehow manifest in your life... even if you don't want them to. It would take a very strong person to overcome all of that programming, IMO.

nods i agree lisa

in fact the woman who gave birth to me and two other girls called the youngest

her mistake for the first couple of years of her life

and i see it in her

also i see street kids that seem to be moved to live up to a name, even when they are wanting to change

and i see it in people i know offline, and then interact with online

how they seem to change some to fit the part almost
