Is there certain sounds or music you like to meditate to or that help you get focssued? For me it is the sound of birds and water falls, and as for music it is hand drums, rain sticks, Flutes and tambourines so on.

Most sounds are distracting to me. I do like drums though. If I use sound it has to be drums, chanting or opera in a foreign language. Anything else and my mind wanders.

when it comes to natural sounds, I loooooove listening to trickling streams and rivers, and thunder storms with lots of pretty rain. Believe it or not, I think listening to elks, whales and wolves works wonders!

I love having music on... Most of the time it's something like Medaeval Baebes or Ed Alleyne-Johnson's instrumental electric violin music. Something dreamy and spiraling :)

also orchestrial darkwave/electronica (think Tool/NIN). Ya I like those to and certain Industrial music I can zone out on really easy ..
Something else I like to use but forgot to add was using bells with certain tones to it .

As far as helping focus goes, there are two ways to look at it: What sounds help me keep my focus while I meditate? and What will help me learn to keep my focus anywhere anytime. I usually play music while meditating based on the second question, so I tend to go for very loud fast paced music. It is especially difficult to maintain a meditative state when the song is one which you normally lose yourself in and dance or sing to.
When it comes to helping me find peace in the moment, I like rain more than anything else.

I like drums for the most part but also certain vibrational tones and sounds and chants. There is some music that I have chosen for specific meditations. For me it depends on what kind of meditation I am about to undertake what I will use.

I just came inside from being at the park across the street and had some time to meditate and one noise I forgot that I loved so much was the wind rustling through the trees and feeling the wind and sun all together :D

I absolutly love Marina Raye's "Nature's Enchantment". It has nature sounds with soothing music or drumming. I was wondering if anyone can recommend other cds that are similar?

There's an odd little tape I bought in Toronto 14 years ago called Celtic Mysteries and, for some reason, I respond to that set of music for meditation better than any other I've ever tried. I had to find it on CD last year as I ditched all my tape players - thanks Amazon!

I recommend good old Steven Halpern.
Chill Out series like Cafe Del Mar works as well. As they mostly have a slow and regular beat, it really speeds up the way you trance.

I like to hear myself sing...The vibrations in my body make me soo relaxed. I also ADORE Taiko drummers. I love the vibrations! That`s what it`s all about for me.
Oh, and nightngales. If you`ve ever heard one sing you`d understand. They`re amazing.

Creating music is a form of mediation to me.
If I'm playing the guitar or working with synth program.
That's all i'm doing.Anything going on around me is totally blocked out.

That is cool I wish I could play a guitar again or even a flute, and I miss having my keyboard to..

Music just distracts me in the same way my thoughts or gurgling stomach or back pain distracts me. Music is a more pleasant distraction than back pain, but I still consider it a distraction. When I meditate, I meditate - I don't listen to music.

It depends on what type of mood that I am in. Sometimes, I need music to help me relax. When I listen to music, I prefer to hear sounds of nature such as waters or birds. Sometimes this music transports me to a magical place. Other times, I do not want any distractions of music. It's amazing how reliant we are of sound. Meditation without music helps me break free from my dependence of technology.

I find this thread an inspiring read, partly thanks to the many kinds of sound and music that are posted about in this thread.
As a part of an answer to the question in the first post in this thread:
When I use sound, I sometimes like it more monotonous, and other times more to the opposite of monotonous.
In this thread there are many kinds of music and sound that I like.
And, I sometimes have had the occasion of meditating to: slowly irregular droning sound, produced by an old table fan or similar, or produced by a musician. I liked it. And it had a helping effect on getting focused.
End of part of an answer.

I find music helps me if it is the right type. Anything with words distracts me, though I really like Enya's music.
I also love water sounds...anything gentle basically. I recently bought a meditation album and I found that some of the songs to be too heavy for meditation, whilst others were very relaxing. :weirdsmil It is a good idea to listen to them online first before buying.

I like to use either natural sounds such as rain, ocean etc (have cd's from purewhitenoise) or native american drums/chants.

Have you ever listened to any albums by Qntal? For meditation purposes I suspect the instrumentals would be disturbing, but in general they do combine an opera voice with some pretty good rhythm. Fusion between contemporary pop/rock and traditional medieval/renaissance music....what you'd get I think if you combined Medieval Baebes and Corvus Corax with Blackmore's Night and Delerium

In response to the thread subject: I don't seem to be able to get into a meditative state, but in general when I try, music is distracting....some of Kitaro's slower music or Michael Genest is OK, tried Brian Eno but there's a discordance there that's almost painful if I leave it on too long.
Nature sounds, when recorded, somehow the sound gets out of balance and they just hurt my ears. Real nature sounds are a different story. Recorded babbling brook, ouch. Real one: nice.

A favorite CD of mine since I was little is Solitudes Piano Cascades. You hear bald eagles, waterfalls, rain, frogs, etc. It's wonderful :uhhuhuh:

I tend to love to listen to the Native American flute and drum when I meditate. I also enjoy listening to Thunderstorms, the ocean, and singing bowls when I meditate.

I listen to Sound Massage by Brigitte Hamm who is based in Germany. She plays a range of crystal singing bowls, and a few other complementary instruments and has female pure tones singing on top - no spoken word to get in the way, just sound. It's beautiful :)

For meditation? So many :D I love celtic music. I also love listening to the sounds of nature, and have quite a few cd's of them on hand. Birds twittering, waterfalls, and yes, even the sound of thunderstorms :p I also love flute and drum music. And of course, listening to mantras are simply splendid! :D

I think it's official for me. I meditate the best when I have music to influence where my mind wanders. My favorite music CD so far is one that I bought today at the Dollar Tree. It was just a dollar but so freaking amazing. I didn't realize that it could be such an amazing CD. It was an awesome find for sure.

Nothing specific. I like to get around, and most of the time I don't want music when I meditate. But when I do I like whale songs, water sounds, nature sounds, piano, cello, harp, native american songs, gregorian chants..a bit of everything OTHER than normal radio.
