A WHITE witch has placed a curse on an Oliver Cromwell celebration day because he is angry about the Civil War leader's persecution of pagans.

Kevin Carlyon, the high priest of the British Coven of White Witches, has cast a spell on the historical re-enactment day outside Ely Cathedral on September 6, which will mark the 350th anniversary of Cromwell's death, calling on the forces of nature to make it rain.

Mr Carlyon normally only uses his magic for good - casting good luck or protection spells - but he has decided to hex the Ely event because he blames the Civil War leader for the execution of hundreds of witches in East Anglia.

He says Cromwell, a former governor and tax collector in Ely, turned a blind eye to the exploits of the self-appointed "Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, whose witchcraft trials led to the death of about 300 people between 1644 and 1646, including women from the Cambridgeshire villages of Haddenham and Sutton.

Kevin, who will make the spell at his home in East Sussex, said: "This event will be a wash-out.

"I will be asking the spirits of nature to make it rain and my track record is quite good.

"I can't believe they are celebrating the life of this man - it's a travesty for all those poor people murdered under Cromwell's rule."

Saturday, September 6, will see a squadron of Civil War re-enactors perform military drills outside the historic cathedral - just a few yards from Cromwell's Ely home - from 10am-4pm, while an actor on horseback will play Cromwell himself.

I guess this one is better than when he put the curse on the first Harry Potter movie.

Update:

"I didn't know anything about this until one of your councillors, who I said I wouldn't name, contacted me, feeling guilty about the role their ancestors played in the Cambridgeshire witchcraft trials," he told the Ely Standard. In response to the anonymous councillor's wishes, Mr Carlyon and 12 followers will cast a spell on the event by invoking the four elements - earth, wind, fire and water - in a candlelit ceremony on Thursday.

Tracey Harding, tourism team leader at Oliver Cromwell House's and the event's organiser, said she was seeking advice on whether to undo the hex, and insisted Oliver Cromwell's controversial role in history was not being swept under the carpet.

"We get people to vote 'hero' or 'villain' at the end of their tour here," she said, "and it comes out about 50-50. We know there is divided opinion about him and it is for our visitors to make their own mind up. Like it or not, Cromwell was an important figure in British history and a very important person in the history of Ely. We're certainly not going to cancel the event."

More than 800 people from the pagan and heathen community have signed a online petition to dethrone Mr Carlyon from his place as King of the White Witches, saying he does not speak for them, but so far just one email of complaint has arrived in his inbox: "The lady didn't agree with what I was doing but she expressed herself in such a loony manner you couldn't take her seriously."

I liked when he put a spell on the Loch Ness monster to hide it from people.
He makes me laugh almost as hard as Laurie Cabot.

I'm not surprised. Does this guy actually know anything about Witchcraft? He's so caught up in the media attention that he "thinks" he gets. I'm pretty sure he only got into Witchcraft to make up ridiculous stories and to try and become famous or something.

Erghhhhhhhh
