A Croatian pensioner committed suicide after a tree growing in front of his house was cut down to make way for a highway, local media said on Wednesday.
The 83-year-old man, Bozidar Secak from Zlatar, in northwest Croatia, shot himself in front of road workers Tuesday shortly after they had cut the oak down, media reported.

Who are we to judge? Apparently the tree was a source of joy in his life. Maybe he liked to sit on his porch and watch squirrels and birds frolic about on its branches and watch them feast on its acorns. Maybe he planted the tree himself when he was a boy and watched it grow all his life...
The addition of a highway in place of that peaceful tree adds much more than insult to injury... it's like more injury to injury. So maybe he just couldn't accept that.

I know what i'd rather see outside my front door. But nothing can be allowed to stand in the way of civilisation's sacred right to drive as fast as they like wherever they like without such inconveniences as perhaps having to slow down or steer round things.

Thats just sad. More highways, more cars and now more pollution! I can see why he did what he did,but still is so sad.

I know, and I presented a plausible explanation of his motives in doing so. Don't get offended, geez.

This poor man's life (as well as his beloved tree, and all wildlife it sustained) was literally paved over by the steamroller of development. Nothing is sacred or protected from the axes and bulldozers of eminent domain.
I guess at least a highway is better than if it were a Wal-mart or McDonalds...

Perhaps he felt he had nothing left to live for.
I can understand that.
Reminds me of what Long Branch, NJ is doing to its citizens (http://www.mtotsa.com), including elderly people who've lived there for many, many years. I didn't own a house there, but I do know the horrible sick feeling I get whenever I stand in the parking lot that was our small neighborhood....and want to do terrible things to those who bought the damned condos (http://www.piervillage.com/). :grrrrr:
One never knows, maybe he had a strong connection to that tree.
Maybe he just hated how he was being ignored by officials who thought they were above everyone.
Whatever the reason, this is so sad, and I can only hope this changes the mind of someone, somewhere.

Have you ever read The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? This has an amusing parody of this.

Oh yes. I expect there was a notice informing him of this, which was on public display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'."
