Grammar police punished for 'fixing' rare sign

PHOENIX - When it comes to marking up historic signs, good grammar is a bad defense.

Two self-styled vigilantes against typos who defaced a more than 60-year-old, hand-painted sign at Grand Canyon National Park were sentenced to probation and banned from national parks for a year. They had removed an extraneous apostrophe and added a comma to the sign.

I'm not impressed, nor am I amused. They were let off far too lightly. Defacing a historical sight simply because they think they have the right to "fix" it? Seriously? Would it be okay to deface the Lincoln Monument to make him cuter?Oh wait, the Statue of Liberty's sign needs changing, it may not be grammatically correct.

It is a bit upsetting if I think about it too much. I say this as someone who always gets nervous around historical artifacts if there isn't a glass case between me and them.
