I recently had a reading (dillogun/cowrie reading) that came out Odu Osa Ogbe (9-8) and i was wondering what is the story (pataki) behind this odu...I was told to offer a musical instrument to Ellegua-- should this be a new instrument bought from the store or one I already have? And I was told I needed to get my Obatala eleke from this Odu but I am currently unable to...how long can I go before doing what the Odu says? i ask because I've heard/read that readings typically last 30 days so if the 30 days passes and I have not completed everything what happens?
Again, I just want to know the story/pataki that goes with this Osa Ogbe and what it means...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi LithiumViolets, Are you a musician? In Ifa Osa'gbe is a very musical signature. I suspect it's the same in Dinlogun. If you are not a musician yourself, I would advise that you filled your life with music at this present moment. You can either hire musicians to play at a party in honour of Orisha, and Aje-Olokun, or you can play to their honour yourself.
As regards the musical instrument offered to Ellegua I would advise that it is an instrument impervious to water, like a rattle or a shekere, but not a drum, because water ruins drum skins.
Osa generally speaks of Ordeals and trials that will arise, but with patience and forbearance you'll end up very blessed for sticking through it. The important thing is not to panic. Practise relaxation for about 30minutes each day, and maybe meditation with it too. Never act out of panic and run away from situations. Osa speaks a lot of witchcraft, the occult and such. But I suppose that the fact that you're here on mysticwicks makes it obvious that you are involved or at least interested in such things.
The tests or ordeals will usually have a psychic or spiritual source to them. Again it is important not to be frightened or act hysterically. Obatala will help to calm you down.
Osa usually brings about change, and an overturning of the old order. Revolutions.
Also watch out for Jealousy, that the people you went through the ordeal with don't hate you for coming out of it better than they did.
In Ayo Salami's book "Ifa - a complete divination" he gives this verse of Osa Ogbe"
Apatapiti
Apitimopata
This was divined for numerous drums
when they were accompanying the king to Ilu Aje (The land of Wealth)
They were told to sacrifice
"We are much to skilled in this craft that we perform even for the King
We don't need sacrifice"
Apatapiti
Apitimopata
This was divined for the Shekere
He was accompanying the King to IluAje (the land of Money)
He was asked to sacrifice
He was asked to sacrifice plenty money
He will be fortunate when he gets there
He will not be left behind.
Shekere offered the money
and performed the sacrifice.
Thus they all went to Ilu Aje with the hope that they could bring back lots of money. But Aje is like this: If she doesn't see good dancing and hear good music she won't come out. When they got there an unfortunate thing happened. It started to rain heavily. All the drums, big drums, small drums, Dundun, Gangan, Igbin etc. All of them got drenched. They were made from animal skins. Only Shekere was made from a gourd. They turned shekere upside down so the water couldn't enter her. After the rain all the other drums were flat, they couldn't intone any drumbeats.
After the rains it was time for the party to begin. They were gathered outside Aje's home. All the drums failed miserably. Only Shekere (the shaker) could produce any musical sound. She started her rhythm like this:
Apatapiti
Apitimopata
Thus was divined for Shekere going to the land of Aje
Apatapiti
Apitimopata
She got there and started to dance
Apatapiti
Apitimopata
What good fortunes await us on earth, who knows?
no one knows the ultimate
we see but the appearance of things
Apatapiti
Apitimopata
What wealth awaits us on earth, who knows?
no one knows the ultimate
We see but the appearance of things
Apatapiti
Apitimopata
How many wives will we have on earth, who knows?
no one knows the ultimate
we see but the appearance of things
Apatapiti
Apitimopata . . . .
and so on
The whole town was dancing, and money started down in a heavy downpour, the king was dancing, Iya Aje(mother Wealth) was dancing. The other drums looked on disconsolately. So much money was emerging and all of it was being collected.
Then noticing the look on the face of the other drums he changed his tune.
Let's not resort to aggression
Please I beg of you
The heavenly messenger detests aggression
Please do not resort to aggression
I beg of you
Let's not engage in wickedness on earth
I beg of you
if you do good
it will return to you
If you do evil
it will return to you
All of us
Our good deeds will not go unrewarded
Another verse in the same book goes:
Osa plays the drum
Ogbe dances
Let us clap our hands and dance to the Aro bells
Again we notice here that the emphasis is not on drums but on smaller instruments like bells and just simply clapping the hands. These means are usually considered secondary in the making of music but in this instance they are all one has and they do the job well.

I was also going to say that although it is best to perform the sacrifice as soon as possible you will notice that a series of readings will usually be around the same themes, so an unresolved issue will keep coming back. You might get this Odu again in another reading. Or it may be that your whole life is involved in music so this Odu is not just about a certain juncture in your life but part of a greater theme.
I would advise that you bought a new instrument for the offering to Ellegua, but that if you had any instrument at home that you already own and play then I would suggest that you dedicate that one too to Ellegua but after leaving it at the shrine for a while you can take it back home and continue to play it as before but this time bearing the dedication in mind.
Even if you cannot afford obatala ileke at the moment you can still commit yourself to being calm minded and possibly to avoid too much intoxication at the present.

thank you thank you thank you thank you!!! that brought so much clarity to me in the situation. and alot of hope, you must realize. I was a little worried that I would not be able to get the eleke or make the offerings in time but you just assured me that I'll still be fine as long as I do get them done. so thanks for that bit of relief :)
and it's funny you should mention the odu being very musical because since i got the reading, I have been more musical in my life. all my life is centered around music and always has been-- since I was a little girl I always had headphones in my ear, walking around the house, down the street, in the shower (lol literally) with music and I love to sing and dance. i always wanted to sing and/or dance but never thought I'd be good at it. but lately I've been singing more and even recording myself to put music behind it and I've even picked up my guitar again to play after 3 years.....since you mentioned the odu being a musical one, it makes sense to me now that I've had this recent burst of musical passion. I was even thinking one night of going to the crossroads with my guitar to play for Ellegua/Eshu :) but I didn't want to get in too over my head.
thanks again for providing the story of the odu for me and many blessings :yourock::yourock::yourock::yourock:

It's a pleasure. I say keep up with the music and don't worry about being good enough or whatever. Just be true to your passion and your heart and it doesn't matter if the other musicians are louder than you or more impressive than you. Just keep doing your thing and surely the orisha will bless you for it.
