I heard this on the news this morning and thought it was just tragic and heartbreaking. It's just vile to me when anyone has to suffer because of their faith. It's disgusting, and I hope one day we as a species can get over this crap.

Ironically under Saddam they would have been fine.

There are many ironies like that.

Besides the loss of national sovereignty and all the suffering and deaths that have occurred, the main trade-off does appear between enforced tolerance for religious differences, right of women to dress as they please and to work outside the home, etc., on the one hand--and the absence of Saddam's and his brother's thuggish behavior, on the other.

I do note that the Iraqi government (such as it is) is clamoring for the US to get out of their country. I have read that that has, in great measure, to do with the Shiites' wanting to have a free hand to finish what they have begun in "cleansing" much of the country of Sunni Moslems.

The Christians have a very hard lot...as do Sunnis (and in some places, Shiites), as do various ethnic groups, as do gay people (condemned to death, on all sides), etc.

Saddam, regardless of his heavy-handed tendencies, stabalized the region. When the U.S. got him out, the region began to collapse. It will only get worse.

to me it just shows the danger of extremeism (yet again) this idea that there is only "one way" to be/live/exist/believe etc. sad.
