Or About Time Too!

Site agreed for comic duo statue

A home has been agreed for a bronze statue of Laurel and Hardy, in the Cumbrian town where one half of the comic duo was born.

The tribute, created by sculptor Graham Ibbeson, has been in storage since 2005 while a site was found in Ulverston, where Stan Laurel was born in 1890.

I'm not sure if the photo does justice to the statue, Mr Ibbeson's Eric Morcambe statue is rightly famous but this one might prove popular once the local politicians get their finger out!

It was beginning to look like another fine mess for awhile there!

The Stan Laurel statue that recently appeared in Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham, has been placed on the former site of his dads old cinema. Right next to a set of traffic lights, on a very busy stretch of road, away from the main part of the town. It seems such a waste.

It's a pity the artist did not take more time to research his subject, otherwise he would have known that Stan hated that head scratching routine! Personally I think a more reflective pose would have better suited this multitalented artist!

That said, it's not a bad statue and I suppose the link to his father's theatre somewhat dictated the position. I do like some of the little touches, such as the reels of film inscribed with the titles of some of L&H's most famous movies.
