Channeling and Channelled Material

One of the things I associate with the New Age movement is channeling; the passing on of information through a medium. Channeled material is said to originate from so called ascended masters or teachers, spirit guides, well known historical figures and even aliens. New Age book shops are full of titles claiming to be reporting channeled information. To be honest, some that I have read just seems to be bad science fiction and fantasy...

To those who know more about these things I ask, what criteria can we use to evaluate channelled material?

Are there any themes or motifs that identify material as genuinely New Age?

What channeled material would you recommend looking at? ...And why?

I'm not the one to answer since I'm not into channeling, but a thought struck me this morning. How do you evaluate what you get from Gods, whether you reconstruct an ancient religion, work with individual deities, draw down the moon, and so forth? I would guess the same rules would apply?

It is very interesting that you say "how do you evaluate what you get from Gods"...last Thursday my sister and I were driving at night and we are having a similar situation in our lives at the time...we are both a bit taken back and confused about it at times...."the moment I said these words to my sister" Well we both know when it is God speaking to us and not head crap....and the second it was out of my mouth there was a HUGE white flash in the sky right in front of us...we both just looked at each other and said what the F was that....we were in the country and there was nobody around or no houses we were completely in the dark drivng...I would say that was a confirmation of what we were speaking of...

I guess for me...which is what New Age is described as.....I read it and if it says something to my heart or soul it is something to investigate further....for me I go very much by my heart and soul...what feels good and what does not.....I trust Spirit to lead me in the right direction...if I am following Spirit things usually fall into place, if there is chaos and insanity it usually is not of Spirit and I know to look within for a different direction...:uhhuhuh:

I totally respect what you say and I think much the same would apply to how we come to various Pagan beliefs.
I wonder if it worries you at all though that there is just so much "supposedly" channelled material around that people who are looking for new spiritual meaning in their lives can easily be fooled, manipulated or exploited?

that is a hard one....I have only read books that have supposedly been channelled by fairies..Jesus and God.....I do not have much expereince with the rest...any of the books that I have read would not really lead anyone down such a horrible path that they would be hurt from it...yet I can not speak for all...there are many channelled...my only response I guess is "if it is of Love" then it will hurt no one...."if it smells of anger and hate" I might not be so inclined to believe it or take it in...if others choose to read and belive hate/anger based books I guess they would find them whether they were so called channelled or not...

Ok, there are different ideas in the New Age movement about "channeling".

When a spiritual medium is tuned in to Spirit Guides, Ascended Masters, relatives who have passed back into spirit etc, we transmit the information they wish to send to those we read for. This is often termed "channeled" information.

The word "channel" was first used to describe someone formerly known as a "trance medium". True channeled information is not spoken by the medium, but rather the medium's mouth and voicebox are controlled directly by the spirit overshadowing them. A spirit will try a medium on for size several times before channeling commences. The energy of both medium and overshadowing spirit must be compatible.

The medium will usually have very little recollection of what has transpired, what has been said or written. The information has not passed through the mind of the medium. The medium's consciousness is present at all times but is in the background. The overshadowing spirit is controlling their physicality.

Not all spiritual mediums are channels. A medium who is a channel will not channel at every reading. Most white light mediums will only channel those of the Highest.
