Has anyone seen the movie "The mummy" yet? Or the second part "Mummy 2" While they are adventure comedies i liked the visual aspect of the movies, the grandure of ancient egypt is really something to behold in these movies even if it is computer generated and not true to life. The dress and some of the items used are really....nice.
I am a solitary follower of this culture in spiritual practice and while i do not know much, i try to incorporate as much as i can in my rituals, and spiritual ceremonies. I guess i stay a solitary because i am comfortable with my connection with deity alone.
Sometimes it is really hard to practice because i do not live in a quiet area, street noise, boom boxes, etc are a distraction at times, but i don't let this deter me for i am learning to block out the noise and concentrate on where i want my mind to be.
Any others?

Yes, I saw the Mummy and the Mummy returns, they are visually amazing and so realistic. Here in San Jose, we have an Egyptian museum called the Rosicrutian (sp?) Museum which is fascinating and has so much cool stuff to look at. Anyway, I live in a major metropolitan city and it is rarerly ever quiet when I want to do something at home like meditate, but fortunately, we have some beautiful and peaceful wooded areas for spells and rituals that are fairly close by!!
Blessed Be!!

Blessed Be!! Greetings Dragondancer! I agree with your view, the movies were visually amazing, i loved the colors and costumes as well as the images of the pyramids; it also raised some questions about Anupu/anubis. I know he is a god or guardian of the underworld and that he guides the souls to be judged but as for the armies of anubis i wasn't sure of that part...that is until i started reading a book about angels and their armies. I plan on visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art in N.Y.
this weekend, they too have an extrodinary egyptian exibit and like you i don't have the solitude for meditation and must go out of the city; when i tell people i'm going to the woods they want to know what's in the woods and what i'm doing and i tell them i love to camp and fish but it's not the complete truth...if they only knew. May we walk in light Dragondancer.

Yes, I understand completely. One of the places I like to go for my communing with nature hikes is well known to the uneducated people who live in this area as a devil worshipping ground, complete with Urban Legends about a friend's cousin's cousin being there when they were sacrificing a virgin etc. While there are some parts of the area that don't have an entirely positive energy, I have a hard time believing that there are ritual sacrifices taking place there every full moon. Luckily, there are wooded areas that are a 20 minute drive from my current home and a 5 minute drive from the house I grew up in that are secluded and luckily not many people are aware of them, so I can just tell people I'm going for a hike to clear my head.

Well in my area there is a large population of people who practice Santeria and when ever i go out close to home i see sign of their rituals, dead chickens, candels, and even when i'm driving on the street i can sometimes see a garbage bag with feathers sticking out. Not to sound so ominous but be careful where you go some areas are not safe. I love to fish way out in some places and i see signs of rituals that are maybe wiccan in nature but i am not afraid to encounter anyone practicing the wiccan way but santeria frightens me...i guess it must be the sacrificing part, i don't believe in killing anything except to eat it and even in these days i'm trying to get away from that one too...don't eat red meat or pork!!!YAAH.
And speaking for myself (a black male) whenever i go out fishing i meet some pretty unfriendly people who don't want me in the area (non-fishermen) but can you imagine me out there doing one of my rituals when someone who doesn't want me there comes along??? LOL.........i laughed so hard i almost couldn't finish
but you get the idea. Yeah, it's pretty hard finding a place sometimes but that doesn't deter me.

I remember the Roscecrucian (sp?). I use to take my son there and just walk around the grounds some time. Is the Alexandrian bookstore still there? I somehow remember stopping by one time and thought it was gone.

Yes, the Alexandrian bookstore is still there, I think it moved across the garden. The garden there is so gorgeous, I could hang out there all day if I had that much time!!

Tofu is awesome if it is bought fresh from a Japanese food store or directly from the maker. Fortunately for me, we have a place that makes the best tofu in the world about two blocks away!! If you want, go into a Japanese market (provided there is one where you live, if not, an Asian market) and ask at the meat counter if they carry fresh tofu. I can't stand the tofu that comes in the little plastic package. Yucky!!!

Yeah, that's the one i tried; the yucky one in the package and there are asian stores here but the problem would be in not buying the stuff but cooking it appeal to the palate, i'm not afraid to experiment with different foods but this one was not on my likable food list. Maybe i'll look out for a tofu cookbook...

oooh, a friend of mine just got one and she said that she was amazed at all of the things you rould do with tofu. Personally, I just eat it straight with nothing on it, I rarely cook it except as a stir fry with some fresh veggies (I'm fond of snow peas and asparagus tips) in oyster sauce!!

You have inspired us to dig out our copy of The Mummy to watch again. I believe we are following this with the Prophecy trillegy.

Oh go see the mummy returns, it is definitely worth the $9.00!! Actually, you probably don't pay that much for movies since you don't live in the Silicon Inflation Valley, but still, it's worth a trip to the theater!!

Saw both movies and I loved the graphicsin each. I felt that they both did a good job of depicting ancient Egypt.

Yeah, the graphics were great, i do love seeing images of the ancients and would love to visit the country someday but i hear that one should not be surprised by what they encounter there, it is a third world country.

There is a whole section on cooking with Tofu in one of my Cooking Lite Cookbooks. Tofu is amazing stuff. It tastes like textured water, but picks up the flavor of anything you cook it with. I was especially fond of a recipe for pesto that replaced most of the oil with tofu. Yum. Great on Tomato and mozzarella sandwiches. Anyway, if I can find the book, I'll send you a few recipes.

Textured water...hmmm. I had another name for it. But i would appreciate the recipies, that tomato and mozzarella sounds good also, it would probably mask the taste.
Thanks!

It's true! :D At least that's what my part of VC looks like. I look out the window and I see oak trees...and more oak trees....and... :) The only bad thing about them is they attract the little black and red ants that smell like piss, so you really don't want to climb them. :(

I haven't gotten a chance to study ancient Egypt much, but I intend to after I finish my current list of projects. I love the drawings of their dieties though. Do you know if there was a symbolic reason to why the Egyptians drew the faces in profile, the torso in frontal, and the legs in profile?

No, not just with tofu. With tofu Pesto :D That is a sauce made with a ton of fresh basil, a teaspoon of olive oil, a package of silk tofu and Fresh grated parmisean cheese. Oh, and some garlic. YUM!!! For a twist you could change out the basil for cilantro.

I just finished watching The Mummy for about the fifth time, and I'm also reading the book for The Mummy Returns. The visuals for The Mummy were great. I have to wait for the video of The Mummy Returns to come out, but I'm sure the special effects for it will be even better that the first.

I watched both the Mummy and the Mummy Returns... The entertainment value and the special effects are incredible... But according to my more scholarly friends the movie isn't very realistic. The two women that were fighting were using Japanese techniques. They had some problems with the way Anubis was pictured.... the whole selling the soul thing. The columns in the second one after they fell the place didn't come down which if they were holding the ceiling up.... well.. you get the picture. According to my scholarly friends... there is nothing about a Scorpion king ever existing and their biggest gripe of all was how the priest Imhotep was made into a bad guy when the real one was a priest and an architect and was later diefied. Anyway... I didn't watch them for historical accuracy.. They were very good movies and they did a great job with the special effects and stuff.

We really enjoyed The Mummy Returns also. Great visuals. If you cannot afford the $7-$9 it costs to go at night, matinees are the way to go. ($4-$5) The historical accuracy is pretty much non-existant but what the hey...
The Japanese do this simple but delicious thing with tofu. You simply cut out a nice big block of tofu, the silken or soft type works best. Then sprinkle on top of it some soy sauce, grated fresh ginger, and dried bonita flakes (Bonita is a kind of fish) It sounds wierd, but it's very tastey and good for a hot day too. Bonita Flakes can be obtained in most Asian Food Stores. Prices vary wildly, so look around a bit.
I know that the Santeria practice animal sacrifice. Though they perform it in a manner that is much quicker and less traumatic for the animal than your average slaughter house engages in. I was under the impression that the sacrificed animal was then used as food. I wonder if some Santeroes are just being sloppy. That's a shame, not to mention being really bad PR for them. Most folks can deal with ritual slaughter (As with the Judaic Kosher killing of food animals) but leaving bodies around is bad form. Health hazzard too.

$9.00??? Oh don't I just wish!!! Up here it's closer to $12.50!!! Oh well...in answer to the original question, yes I've seen the original Mummy, but I haven't gotten anywhere near a theatre to see the sequel (ahem, I should have said anywhere near a theatre with my hubby...). Looking forward to it though.

I paid about 4.25 to see it matinee. I loved part one, and liked part two even more!
The costumes were great....(can we say, very sexy?)....I didnt' appreciate the computer graphics too much, but for me, the story, and more serious nature than the first movie, was quite good. It was all around great for me. And resparked my interest in Egyptian culture....
As far as Tofu goes...I've had it made in good ways, but I can't cook it. It always comes out real bland....
I'm mostly vegetarian, and tofu does help for protein.
