I dont use guided tapes and so forth for my meditations,
but it does help me to visualize better when I meditate if I play nature sounds or whatever type music in the background that correlates with my visualization

I've heard that watching your watch tick the seconds by is effective, if you want to improve focus/concentration. I haven't tried it myself yet.

I have found that the best enhancement for meditation, if music or a candle flame doesn't rock your boat, is your own voice.
Since you will drift away if you try to guide yourself, try recording your own voice as if you were guiding another through meditation - see what works and what doesn't until eventually you have a small library of recordings you can draw on when you feel you need the guidance.
I prefer this idea because:
- words can help you paint a picture if your mind is to busy to paint one without help
- as you record, you are practicing the meditative thought processes
- you can make custom recordings including music, sounds, and voice tones you find particularly soothing
- if you don't already, you unconsciously begin to trust your own voice. if you already trust your own voice, who better than you to guide yourself into meditation?

use your imagination. no i'm not saying it to be snarky, i mean it quite literally. guided meditations are controlled daydreams with a purpose.

Here's a good place for guided meditations - http://www.meditationoasis.com/podcast/
I just plug in the earphones and let go... :)
Another one, this is Pagan-oriented. So far I've listened to the very first, it's not bad --
