I was wondering if you all had any suggestions/comments for those of us who practice systems of folk magic while at college...

Teresa gave me a great idea with kicking a ball of cabbage (or was it lettuce?) across the floor to cleanse it.

What would you all suggest that doesn't involve candles or incense or anything that would cause one to get in trouble while staying in the dorms? The fire marshal, for safety reasons, has banned almost everything like that.

Thank you!

I'm in a dorm, I'm interested on tips to. :)

Although I must admit candles probably wouldn't set off a smoke alarm, it's still not good to break rules.

Powders. You can sprinkle them, blow them instead of incense...
You might also do well to read through Hyatt's material if you can find it. It's quite interesting to see actually how few candle spells his informants give, compared to what you usually see nowadays.

Aahh, life in the coop...I mean dorm....so free and lovely. lol Honestly, I had a hard time cleansing my space just from the excessive amount of emotion and energy you get living cheek by jowl with so many disparate humans! I finally took refuge in salts and crystals. When you clean ( yes, you must clean ) try to use the more natural cleansers that are available now. ( I had to make my own! ) Then, wipe down your spaces with a solution of mild salt water, properly charged, of course. That's easy to do, hust leave a container on your windowsill when the moon is full. Or someone elses, if you don't get good light. Charging crystals is just as easy, and they can act as both warding agents and cleansers; just keep a charged crystal in an inconspicuous place(where it wont be lifted) and change it out every full moon. You can easily find blessing chants and spells in a lot of different places, and salt is cheap!! Sea salt is usually better, but still easy to find, and any salt works in a pinch. I even used garlic salt once, though my roomy bitched about the smell! lol I hope some of this is helpful, and I wish you joy and luck on your path!

miredsylph,

That makes a lot of sense and I could definitely see myself doing that.

I'm going to be getting some sea salt and mix it with water to make holy water.

There are many "floor washes" that can be used. I frequently use sea salt and water to clean and protect. And as mentioned before there are many powders you can use as well. Also, you can use some essential oil fragrances in a diffuser or you can use them in a mister bottle and spray the room/air.

They have so many options in the battery operated candles these days. The little tea candles are wonderful AND you can color them with permanent marker.

I used to mix different herbs and such into my unscented potpourri, which basically consisted of husks, shells and such that I had picked up and put it all in a big bowl. I would just sprinkle herbs over it and dump it out when it got messy.

I also kept a "travel case" and that way when I could get out and have a bit of privacy, I could do my thing with everything I needed. I won't lie, I am too darn lazy to go search out the thread on the traveling cases, but there is one somewhere and it was really good.

I no nothing of dorm life but here is an idea...
Even if you can not get make steaming hot water in a dorm you can get hot water from somewhere and put it in a thermos.
Then, in the dorm take steaming hot water and pour a cup!
Stir oils and/or powdered incense in that.

You get a very mild aroma thats not fire or smoke related at all!!

Ever have a cup of tea that you could smell when you walked into a room? Same thing but with the incense!

You can break and crush the stick or cone incense to and use it the same way.

I got the idea, tried it and found it worked great when I didnt want smoke around the kids or candles.

Incense aroma tea with you favorite incense no matter what its form.

Steam instead of smoke. You can smudge to with the steam.

Just do not drink! ;)

Thanks, Shanti.

We have a kitchen on my floor and all I'd have to do is get a pot and boil the water in it... I could even do some kitchen witchery in there... Hmm... Quit giving me ideas you all! ;) :D I'm going to get in (or start, you choose which one it will be) some witchy trouble... And I'm gonna be lovin' it!

I used a vaporizer in place of incense, a hot pot will do in a pinch if it's a decent one.

Although TBH I didn't do a whole lot in the dorms, and did most of my work outside or in requisitioned areas with a group of like minded individuals.

Ya it's a head of lettuce and you can act like you are cutting up with it and no one will be the wiser.

Think we also talked about herb sprinkles in the dollar tree squirt bottles too and salt water or just a pinch of sea salt between your bed sheets.

Don't forget the fresh Basil too !

Excellent idea Shanti! And one I'm going to add to my "collection". You know...you could even buy some empty teabags and write on the little tags what you are working on and then put your herbs and/or incense in the teabag then put that in the steaming water just like a regular teabag..........just be sure to throw the bag away when done and pour the water down the drain so no one will mistakenly drink it!

Now that's a great idea!

So now all I need to do is start working on a herbal section in my Gramarye.
