I'm tired so I'll try to keep this brief. Just got back from the hospital, its almost 5am. my mom woke up yesterday feeling sick. She thought she had food poisoning. At 7 pm, she was taken by ambulance to the hospital. She's diabetic, and her blood sugar spiked to around 1160 (normal is like 100-200). She went into diabetic ketoacidosis (sp?). Her body Ph was 6.8, when 7.4 is normal, and below 7.0 generally is not good.

She's doing a bit better now, but she's going to be in ICU for a few days while she recovers. She's becoming more lucid and responsive, which is positive. I could really use some positive thoughts right now, its been a scary ordeal. I just want my mom to be okay.

so they say she's gradually improving, but its very slow. She's still not very cognitive. They are putting in a pickline to make it easier to medicate her.

one thing we'll have to work on is putting together a medical history for my mom, with all of her current medications and everything, so that if something like this happens again, that information won't be hard to find. The ICU nurse suggested something like that last night. We also need to do one for my dad, since he's disabled and has a lot of health problems. if anything ever happened to him, none of us would have any clue. At least I'm mostly up-to-date on my mom's health situation.
and i think its a good idea for everyone to put together such a list for themselves, and make sure that people have access to it in case of an emergency.

Healing energies on the way for your mom.

Good advice about keeping a list of ongoing medical issues and medications.

so my brother went to visit her for a bit today, and i'll be going later this evening with my sister. She's cognitive, and was asking to see us. When my brother was there, her blood sugar was down to 200, which is great considering... Her blood pressure was getting a bit low again, though.
She's stuck spending her birthday in the hospital, but I think they'll probably release her before the weekend.

Wow! How did this happen? I know my blood sugar tries to compensate when I don't eat right. Or move.
Many, many hugs for you, and energy for your Mom.
How was her kidney blood work?

How was her kidney blood work?

the Dr. said she had some sort of infection which caused her body chemistry to go all wonky... She has an insulin pump which delivers a steady stream of insulin to her body, so this doesn't happen very often (I think the last time her blood sugar was anywhere near those levels was 18 years ago when my brother was born, and they gave her some experimental drug in the hospital).

I didn't hear anything about her kidneys, so I'm assuming thats all still fine... She was severely dehydrated, about 6-8 quarts low on fluids when she was admitted to the hospital, but they were able to rehydrate her fairly quickly.

So her condition hasn't really changed in the past two days. She's mostly stable, but she isn't improving. Her blood sugar isn't staying steady, its been rising and falling, and her blood pressure has also been fluxuating. She hasn't gotten worse, either, but at this point, it could go either way.

today she was moved to the observation unit. Her condition hasn't worsened, but it hasn't been improving either. The observation unit is pretty much where they put people when they decide that they are doing everything they can do, and things are pretty much out of their hands. Its sort of like she's stuck in a medical limbo...
