View Full Version : Pregnant and Scared

So, after thinking for eight years that Preston and I would never have kids of our own, I am pregnant. I have no idea how far long I am (it's hard to calculate when you don't have a menstrual cycle), no idea what to expect, and so happy that I can barely keep from crying with joy. However, I'm also really scared because, according to what I've been reading online, women with PCOS can have a 50% miscarriage rate. I go to the doctor tomorrow to find out more about how far along I am and if everything is okay.
Please pray for me and Preston and our little one. I don't know if I'll be able to take it if I miscarry after never thinking I would ever become pregnant. Just send us prayers, energy, reiki, candles, whatever you do. I don't think I'm making a lot of sense here, but I'm so overjoyed and terrified at the same time that I can barely keep myself together here. Part of me is trying not to get my hopes up, but the other part of me is telling myself that I need to stay positive and not be stressed out.
Expect me to be on here a lot, ranting, raving, and possibly hysterical.

First of all, congratulations! :boing:
Second, it's good to try to keep a level head about it all. Stressing out and worrying overly much about a 50/50 chance of miscarriage won't do you, daddy, or baby any good.
Third, I'm thinking about y'all. :hugz:

Energy in the way!
My daughter miscarried twice before she carried a baby to full term, it actually happens a lot more than most people realize. It left her feeling very ambivilent about being pregnant, afraid she might have another miscarriage, even when she was in her third trimester. I sure hope things go well for you since it's almost a miracle that you get pregnant at all.

Thanks, everyone. I have my appointment tomorrow at 3:00 and they will be doing an ultrasound to see how far along I actually am. I've been doing some research online and found some things that can help people carry to full term with my condition (namely, progesterone supplements), so I'm hoping that maybe I can talk to my doctor about testing for low levels and then supplementing if I need to. I'm also trying to be calm, but it sure isn't easy.
Thank you so much for all the prayers and good energy. I'm hoping this is what is going to get us through this safe, sound, and healthy.

Don't quote me on this....but, I'm pretty sure that progesterone levels go up all on their own when you are pregnant. Pregnancy does a whole whack of things to your hormones!

Your pg? :boing::boing::boing:
Just take it one day at a time and listen to your doc and talk to your doc...ask questions and dont just follow blindly, have him/her explain whys and hows for everything!
Yes, drive your doc nuts! If you get a prescription, why this one, why this dose, etc.
Information is a tool for our own well being, and in this, case your wee ones. :)
With understanding fear can be put on a back burner.

warm hugs and good wishes to you that sometime in feb. you will have a rapid labor, an easy birth and a healthy baby.
As far as driving your doc nuts, that's what you're paying for. make no mistake about it!!
progesterone supps are indeed used in pcos pregnany where progesterone isn't rising as they want it to. although you will be well perferated after all the blood draws!

Don't worry too much. Women with PCOS can and do have good pregnancies and healthy babies all the time. Definitely get the progesterone checked. Demand the test, and demand treatment if your level is less than 12. I have PCOS, and I am convinced that progesterone supplementation saved my baby. (I had been spotting before I got the supplementation at around 6 weeks.)
Apparently a good proportion of miscarriages in women with PCOS can be traced to the progesterone levels not rising as they should. The happy news about this is that the progesterone supplementation works really well. I now have a very healthy (and extremely active!) baby boy.
The Crinone transvaginal cream supplementation worked really well for me - but there are lots of different kinds.

Yup, progesterone is supposed to go up when you're pregnant, but with PCOS, sometimes your body doesn't make it during the pregnancy like it should, which can cause problems, so the doc can give *shudders* suppositories. :weirdsmil

Yay. I'm so glad someone here has experience with what you have. I have just recently been looking in to progesterone levels etc. for my own issues....I suspect I am low myself.

Okay, had my appointment. I'm happy to report that the baby is doing well, and I am at 8 weeks 1 day. We saw the ultrasound images and heard the heartbeat, and the doctor and ultrasound person both told me everything looks good and there's nothing to be concerned about at this time. I did demand a progesterone test (my doctor said they would not normally do one unless someone had a history of miscarriage, so I'm glad I asked for it) and they did lots of other blood work as well as a urinalysis. It does look like I have a little bit of a UTI in the works, but it seems pretty mild, so they're going to do some more looking at the bloodwork and then maybe give me an antibiotic for it.
So now, we're just waiting for the bloodwork to come back to see what we're looking at there as far as the infection and the levels, and if everything is alright there, I won't see the doc again for four weeks. If there is something concerning in the bloodwork, I'll go back immediately.
I really appreciate everyone's prayers, energy, and thoughts. When I saw my baby on the screen in front of me, I just started weeping. Seeing has made this all so real.

So, I called the doctor's ob/gyn's office today. My culture came back good, so I don't have to worry about a UTI. Everything was within normal ranges. They just think I might have been a little dehydrated from all the vomiting I'm doing. The good news is the nausea/morning sickness is getting a little better every day.
As far as my progesterone, I was at a 12.1 on the day that I did the labs. It's still a little on the low side, but from what I've read not critically low. My doc isn't in right now but is supposed to call me on Monday in case she wants me to come in for more labs or to prescribe supplementation.
I'm still worried and scared, but trying not to be. I'm almost at nine weeks now, and I keep telling myself that I'm going to pull through to 12 weeks when the placenta takes over the production of the progesterone and everything will be peachy. Please keep remembering us...we need all the baby-sticking energy we can get!

Well, yesterday/today was sort of a mixed bag. I got to the Dr's office and everything seemed to go fine. I had a Doppler scan and heard the baby's heart beat and moving, so that was great, although they decided to wait until week 20 to do the next ultrasound. I asked some questions and got some answers I needed, a pretty boring and uneventful visit, for which I was happy and grateful.
However, right after I left the office, I started itching across my chest. It was weird. Then my arms started. I noticed a tiny, red raised series of bumps forming across my arms. It was very itchy. I called the doctor back and told her what was happening. She said to take some Benadryl, and if I didn't feel better in the morning, to come back.
Well, the rash just got worse and worse. It spread over my entire body, and the bumps got so close together it looks like a sunburn instead of a rash. I tried everything I could think of to get relief--oatmeal bath, Benadryl cream, benzocaine cream, calamine lotion. I continued to take the Benadryl as directed. Nothing helped. I was miserable and couldn't sleep because I kept waking myself up with scrubbing my skin raw scratching in my sleep.
At three in the morning, I woke Preston up because inside my nose and mouth/throat were now itching. It scared me, because I was worried if the rash was spreading there, it might affect my breathing.
We went to the ER. I waited for almost three hours, and the doctor didn't inspire much confidence in me. He barely spoke to me, mumbled a lot, and didn't seem to know what medicines to give me. He told me he was going to go look up "what classes were okay for first trimester....B? Cat C? Cat D?". He just didn't remember. That seemed problematic for a couple of reasons, since I am four months along and no longer in the first trimester. He also said it could be a reaction to something or a virus, he didn't know. But, he didn't do any blood tests or a urinalysis or anything.
He never came back. A nurse came in, gave me a Benadryl (which I had been taking all night with no relief) and a shot of Tagamet in the rear end. She gave me a prescription for Benadryl and Tagamet and said I should feel better in 25 minutes or so and that I should follow up with a doctor.
Well, it is now 9:30 am, and I am not feeling any better. I am still covered head to toe with this rash and am miserable. I itch so much I feel like tearing my skin off and starting again. I'm worried if this will have an effect on the baby. I have an appointment with my ob this afternoon, so we'll see what happens there. At least I'm confident in her ability to do her job.
Ugh.

I'm still covered head to toe and still itchy. I also have a big, hard knot developing on the top of my right breast/underarm area. It looks like it's sort of coming to a head or something. It's tender and hot to the touch. I'm thinking now I've been bitten by something maybe.
I'm going to my OB's right now, so that I know anything they give me will be safe for the baby.

Sorry I haven't updated before this. I've spent most of the last two days sleeping because the medicine they gave me is knocking me out.
Okay...I went to my OB's. She was shocked by the way I looked...I was BRIGHT red all over, like a horrible sunburn. She got to looking at me and told me that what I had wasn't a true rash...it was actually petekia (sp?) from the capillaries bursting under my skin and bleeding. By this time, the bite site is red and swollen and hot to the touch, tender and several inches across. She couldn't believe they didn't keep me at the ER for monitoring for a while, or at least do a doppler to make sure everything was okay there.
She gave me a shot, prescribed antibiotics (Bactrin, I think is how it's spelled) for the bite and Reglan for the itching and reaction. She then did a doppler to listen for the baby, and thank the Goddess, everything is fine there.
I have to go back to be looked at again, because the bite spot is just getting bigger and bigger, so I'm a little worried there. I have no idea what kind of bite it is, or even if it's some kind of sting, because I didn't feel it when it happened. But, whatever it was, I was SERIOUSLY allergic. So, I'm going to have to keep an eye out still, and she said that if I start to feel it in my nose or throat again, I have to go to the ER immediately.
In the meantime, I am just going to take Aveeno baths and sleep. And not scratch! Really! I'm going to stop! As soon as I get this spot.....

Oh dear, I'm so sorry that you such a bad reaction to the bite. I recently had to deal with poison ivy so I understand how hard it is not to scratch. Hopefully the meds will help ASAP and in the meantime we usually don't scratch while we're sleeping so sleeping is probably good. Glad to hear the little one is still safe and snug.

I'm doing better. I feel a lot less itchy, but the bite site is still pretty nasty-looking. It's red and blotchy and bruised and the exact spot of the bite is sunken in, like a volcano. It's pretty gross. I'm keeping an eye on it, and of course, Preston is worrying over it like a mother hen. :)
I'm still taking the meds and am getting a little better every day. I'm just hoping the bite itself will get better because it's really a mess.
Thanks for all the good thoughts and energies!

First off, congratulations on your pregnancy!! :)
You are in southern IL? My guess is that you were bit by a brown recluse spider, we have them in west/southern IL and they are nasty. A couple of the patients I work with got bitten last year, and they developed very similar symptoms to yours although their allergic reaction was much less severe.
They like to live in wood, and can nest in headboards, so often they bite you in your sleep and you don't even notice.
Keep an eye on the area of the bite, and stay in contact with your doctor. The bites can become necrotic and very badly infected. I wish you the best of luck with everything!

Thank you for your prayers, Clair! I really appreciate it!
Willow, the doc is making me wait! So, we have three more weeks before we find out. At the next visit they do the 4D color ultrasound and make a DVD of it for us, and we will find out if it's a boy or a girl. So, more waiting. :boing:

I'm having a crazy streak of weird health stuff. First, the bug bite and subsequent reaction. Then, two days ago, I threw up so hard I blacked both my eyes! I didn't even know it was possible, but I broke the blood vessels around my eyes and across the bridge of my nose. Today, I pulled something in my back with vomiting. My doctor thinks the antibiotics I'm taking for the bite is making me throw up so hard.
But, honestly, I'm trying to be cheerful about the whole thing, because I know in the end, I will definitely forget all about all this stuff!

Ask your doctor if it would be feasible for you to take probiotics...
At the very least, try to eat some organic yogurt. You will likely find that that helps, at least a little. (Maybe even a lot.)
Hope you feel better soon!

I've been eating yogurt in the mornings, because it's one of the few things that doesn't make me so sick earlier in the day. However, today is my last day of the antibiotics, so I'm really happy about that.
The bite site looks a lot better...it still has a big, hollow hole in the middle, though. Preston looks at it every night and shakes his head.

You could always use the story of how sick your were while pregnant to get your child to do their chores! :uhhuhuh: Then again, that may not work. My mom tried that, I still never did anything. :smileroll

LMAO Glowy is right, you wont forget about the throwing up it will just become part of the story you tell.
I was seriously sick when I was pregnant with toria. The only thing that worked for me was a mixture of raspberry and mint that I drank 24 hours a day.

I'm doing pretty well. Still sick, but not as much as a few weeks ago, and the bite is completely healed. I wish I felt the baby moving, but nothing yet. I got to the doctor on...is it the first or the second? I'll have to look at my calender. But, that's the visit where we find out if we have a little girl or a little boy in there. I'm really excited to see the baby wiggle around. It always alleviates all my worries and makes me feel happy and secure about the pregnancy.
