WASHINGTON — The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.

PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.

"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."

During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood.

"Get out of here," the president told the pesky insect. When it didn't, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead.

"Now, where were we?" Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker."

I could say this was done in bad taste, but on the other hand it amused me.

 :noway: ...yet another reason why PETA will never be taken seriously.

They have been running that clip all over the place today, I figured it was just a matter of time before someone had something negative to say about it.

Seriously, PETA? First the inhumane throwing of dead fish, now this?

I guess none of them take cold medicine, or viral medication... and their houses are infested with ants, rodents, and mosquitos because to deprive them of their new habitat and feeding grounds is inhumane.

what a joke.

*sigh* PETA are a pack of morons with nothing better to do with their time. Seriously.

Flies are filthy. I hope Mr. Obama washed his hands after. PETA has gone a bit too far.

Catch a fly just to release it outside. Where it will just fly right back in again, because that's what flies do.
Or even worse let more flies in.

It's of course perfectly OK to swat a fly, but that worries me that the Prez was apparently unable to ignore it mid-interview.

Flies are pesky bastards that sometimes you just can't ignore, especially if they're buzzing around your head. I don't understand PETA and this proves that they are...idiots.

I am a big one for putting like, spiders and moths and beetles back outside. However, there are some insects that really are pests and hazards...and flies are amoung them. Trust me, we have six dogs, I see where the flies like to hang out. I definetly do not want their little poopy feet all over my kitchen.

Someone look up Stephen Colbert's "Positive Obama Coverage" It makes a nice little laugh based on this fly swatting.

It's a fly. As far as I'm concerned, it's an insect, NOT AN ANIMAL! I'm really beginning to despise people that publicly pick fights over petty crap. PETA is definitely at the top of that list

Personally, I respect flies and won't kill them. Hell, today I even let a mosquito live after it was drinking my blood. But that's me. I wouldn't expect anyone else to do so in a million years. Sometimes, I even think I'm ridiculous.
