When a predominantly gay synagogue in Manhattan learned that a group of ultra-Evangelical Christians were planning a protest outside their building, the congregation decided to turn the hate rally into a fundraising event.

Parishoners from the Westboro Baptist Church, a Kansas-based institution, gathered on Sunday outside Congregation Beth Simchat Torah with signs reading "God hates fags" and "Jews stole the land."

The synagogue heard several days in advance of the church's planned demonstration and decided to counter the protesters' publicity drive with one of their own, rather than pursuing legal action.

The congregation encouraged its supporters to donate at least $1 for every six minutes that the demonstration lasted.

Following the 51-minute protest, the synagogue was able to raise more than $10,000 in donations.

That is turning a frown upside down hehehe.

Though having seen a program on the Phelps family I dont really see what the uproar is. They are really being arses about it but the bible is fairly clearly supporting most of what they say.

Funny, I don't ever remember reading the part in the bible where it says to protest a persons funeral:eyebrow: maybe I missed that part.

On the OT, good for them! I'm sure that will chap Phelps for a bit.

Well they are being arses about it but war is explicitly forbidden to christians. Peter cut off the ear of a soldier at calvary and christ forbade him from violence. So protesting at christian funerals for soldiers is fair enough.

He had lots of good idea's in the ghandi/mother teresa realm but he also trashed the money changers in the temple when they didnt meet those idea's. Besides we do live in the biblical babylon down to the last detail. They arent wrong we would be obliterated by God according to the bible.

Nuadu, the Phelps clan goes primarily by the OT which Christians also use in their faith as much as they do the NT. There are many God sanctioned wars in the OT.

Good! I hope others take a cue from this and start doing the same when they are confronted with the Phelps Loony Toons.

Hmm, maybe we could raise money to keep MW running by seeing how long this poster continues to support the Phelps cult in this thread? Maybe donate a dollar a day?

Once again, the Bible is just a book.
Written by men, edited at the whim of misogynistic, prejudiced men. It's no wonder that people are leaving churches in droves. I believe that if there WAS an omnipotent, ever present "God" these ignorant, nasty mean and unfeeling people would be struck down in the streets on a daily basis.
I welcome this "God" to drop lightening on these people where they stand.

They aren't protesting war. They're protesting the soldiers, claiming that God is punishing the U.S. for loving homosexuals. As in we're only at war because we're a "fag-loving country," and that every soldier that dies deserves to do so.

As in we're only at war because we're a "fag-loving country," and that every soldier that dies deserves to do so.Bingo. While I certainly don't have the temerity to suggest I know the mind of Christ, I don't think inflicting further emotional trauma on the grieving loved ones of soldiers would be something he'd endorse.

I can't quote a lot of the Bible but I do like John 8:7 "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." and Matthew 7:1 ""Do not judge so that you will not be judged."
