According to a police report, Ram Singh and Sudhir Singh demanded the bribe on Thursday when Dinesh Kumar Lodh and his pregnant wife Kavita attempted to carry his bicycle into the train compartment when the couple boarded a train in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

When Mrs Lodh said she was not carrying enough money, and instead offered a 5 rupee (6p) bribe, the railway officers allegedly pushed her from the train.

As she struggled to grab hold of the door, she fell under the wheels of the train and was killed instantly, witnesses said. The little girl, who had been sitting on her mother's lap, also fell out of the moving train but escaped with minor injuries.

Well, that's Uttar Pradesh for you

I had a hunch when I clicked on this link this would be another UP scenario, for some reason more than their fair share of gruesome tales come out of this region. It seems to be some crazy, backwoods part of India.

Like the story of the UP equivalent of Romeo/Juliette, an untouchable boy who became involved with an upper caste girl much to the consternation her family who were totally freaked about losing their daughter to the wrong side of the tracks. The couple got out physically safe, they had the good sense to skip town when they eloped. The angry mob that came to his house had to make due with immolating the young mans mother.

Tragic cruelty that I know happens there. I still hope to visit India in February or March next year, though I am guessing Westerners are treated somewhat differently.

That is terrible. But like other people have said I've heard things happen in that part of India. At least the girl on her mothers lap survived.
