That's pretty amazing! Most people that suffer injuries like that usually die on the spot or a few hours later. Leave it to the Vatican to want to "investigate"

That's awesome that he survived, but do they seriously do this? Investigate through a legal process whether something is a miracle or not?

Their investigation is due to the claims by the family that the young man was saved due to prayers to Father Emil Kapaun. If the Vatican determines that yes, this was a miracle by their very rigorous standards, it's a move towards sainthood for Kapaun.
It's standard procedure for the Vatican in such cases, and they do a LOT of investigating, medically and otherwise, to determine if it truly was a miracle or if it was just modern medicine that saved him.

Yes, they seriously do that. But it's not just a legal process, it's scientific as well. They'll look at it medically, and determine if there is a sound medical or scientific reason for his survival before they declare it a miracle.
The Catholic Church's definition of miracle is very much different than the everyday person's definition of it.

Oh I see... now this is something that eluded me. Thank you!
