View Full Version : No Fan of Fireworks

It's that time of year when, for seven days, we are forced to tolerate the noise and fire hazard of fireworks. I hate it.

The racket scares pets, chases birds away from nests and feeders, and creates a lot of extra trash in the street and on sidewalks. What's more, you never see a parent "supervising" these kids, as required by our local fireworks ordinances.

One day and night of that noise is bad enough, but seven?? It's pretty damn annoying. <insert partypooper emoticon>

Welcome to the world which does not revolve around you? People generally like to create noise and are attracted to sparkly lights (especially colorful ones). Sit back and try to enjoy. ;)

I hate all of the regulations with them, if a parent lets a retarded kid blow off his hand it is the kid and the parents fault. Those of us who are more responsible don't get to use them (they are illegal in Ohio...fortunately indiana and kentucky are only an hour away).

I don't mind paying full price, and honestly I am usually so loaded up by the 4th I don't think about sales...there is a place I love in Richmond, right across the state line (I mean feet across), has to be the size of a Wal Mart...freaking awesome.

Now in Canada the fireworks start on July 1st because we have a lot of Americans with summer homes here on the Island so you see a lot of fireworks, then the random parents and teenagers start running around my island bouncing roaming candles every where, then July 4th Canada say and instead of having a huge elaborate fire works display we have just an ok one but it lasts a very long time.. :p

Any fireworks display is a good one...except for the idiots who keep shooting them off after 12-1 A.M.

Now the noise doesn't bother me at all I don't sleep until about 4 am anyway and usually have my huge fan on in the night so more commonly than not I never hear one go off. Even when I do hear them at all hours it does not bother me even a little.

Can't agree. When I lived in DC, we went down and watched fireworks over the Mall each year... no other display could possibly compare. So, see, I'm not completely against them.

why seven days? i'm just curious.

if you don't like fireworks to each their own. i like them though, but i can see why it bugs you, my dogs are very frightened of them and my girl doesn't think much of them either. in my family we never let the kids go unsupervised even with sparklers. its a big fam event for us every year. we buy the safe and sane ones from wal-mart and my uncles go out to laughlin to buy the cool ones we aren't allowed to have in certain areas here.

I just think there is a time and a place for it...and I don't mind it on weekends, but even when I had a late night schedule I thought it was inconsiderate to keep going too late on a weeknight.

I love the big displays, the events etc.. I hate when my neighbors set off the ones that just BOOM- with no sparkles.
Those annoy me at 2:00AM when the car alarms start going off.

I find them very annoying after the second day as well. We live in a mobile home park and the park rule says "no fireworks within the park" but some people always ignore the rule. The police have no jurisdiction inside the park, and the park manager always has the holiday off so we can't call the office to complain. Gah.

Meanwhile - this \/ makes absolutely no frigging sense whatsoever to me.

Sale of fireworks within the city of A****** KS shall be permitted:
June 27th thru July 5th

Discharge of fireworks within the city of A****** KS shall be permitted:
July 2nd thru July 5th

Yeah, right... people are going to buy fireworks and they're going to wait 5 days to discharge them. Get real.

I don't mind the sparkly displays but the morons who blow off M80s/half a stick of dynamite piss me off especially late at night.

Supervision doesn't really help. My dad and I nearly blew up his car one year. :weirdsmil

We can't use them in our neighborhood. You have to go out of the county which tends to have less houses, anyway. July 4th, though, someone always sets off a few illegally in our neighborhood. I don't really mind unless it goes on all night.

Fireworks are illegal in Arizona. But I do like watching the big professional displays that we have. Although there seem to be fewer and fewer of them each year.

I hate when people drag their dogs along to see fireworks. The poor things are always terrified and the stupid owners don't get how much louder it is to their ears than to ours!!

I dont like how people who dont have their dogs desensitized bring them out to fireworks. There are tho, plenty of dogs who have no problem with the noise at all.

If your dog isnt desensitized to it, then the poor thing should be at home, in a safe room or crate where it can hurt itself.

Personally I love fireworks and we set some off every year at my MIL who lives in the County.

Oh, jeez! I've never seen that here, but I can only imagine if I took my dog, Pepper, to one. She freaks out at the sound of plastic bags, she'd probably lose her mind over fireworks. Poor things.

Aww..how can you hate fireworks? :(

My dog doesn't seem to be scared of fire works..and my cats couldn't care less.

I love fireworks though. The idea of possibly blowing your hand off makes it all the more entertaining :O!

My dog is scared of fireworks too, when he's about to go out, as soon as he hears one, he runs back in and hides behind the sofa, or a chair.

I think if your dog is scared of fireworks, you shouldn't bring them to see them, leave them at home, where they won't be traumatised.

That said, I do like fireworks, they're fun! :boing: :).

It's not the fireworks actually. It's the idiots who think it's just fine and dandy to make all that noise between midnight and 7 am right outside my bedroom window.

And because both my granddaughters and myself have Sensory Integration Disorder and that kind of noise - random, unexpected and loud - is very hard on our nervous systems. It's a neurological thing, not a choice or a preference.

I love the Canada day fireworks. I usually take my daughter to the forks to seem them. It's free. It's an excuse to go out. You get to spend time with them family and look around at all the cultural items and taste many cultures of foods. Why not.
The only thing I hate is catching the bus dowtown afterwards. Its a bit scary since our city is increasing in violent crimes.

 I love going to see the big fireworks extravaganzas - I can choose how close or distant I sit and I know when they'll be starting and when they'll be ending. Not like having them go off at unexpected random times during the day and night right outside my window. :aburst:

I don't mind them on the actual 4th of July. It's the little sh**s who light their firecrackers at 3am in the morning. We're fast asleep, then we're rudely awakened to the sound of, POP POP POP!!!!! It happens every year....multiple nights.

In Utah, they also have a firework celebration on the 24th of July. That means we get to put up with fireworks for an entire month. :weirdsmil

I don't mind the big, professional fireworks up in the sky. Those are lovely. And I can cope with the street-level, "safe and sane" fireworks. But the illegal crap makes me nervous as all get-out, because I am absolutely TERRIFIED of some ass launching his roman candle, and it landing on our roof! Now that I'm a homeowner, I'm a zillion times more paranoid about it.

4th of July is my favorite because of all the fireworks. Yes, my one dog hates them, but we take the necessary steps to keep her calm, especially when we're not at home with her and out lighting stuff of our own off or watching one of the big displays.
I love fireworks. It was the one thing that I wished I had enough money for at my wedding. I would've loved to have some just go off, but it didn't happen.

As a homeowner I would be a zillion times less worried thanks to homeowners insurance.

I live for the big end of the day 4 of July extravaganza. My dogs don't mind fireworks as a general rule but I wouldn't bring them to the big show.

As far as the random all week midnight and beyond stuff... I am with Mystic Christian. The local miscreants have already begun around here. 1AM Thursday it went on for half an hour. Nine days early. Clearly has nothing to do with the celebration.

Homeowners insurance can't replace family photos or pets that were left home alone because the noise of the fireworks frightens them.

What she said. I HAVE homeowners insurance. I'm not stupid. But I wouldn't be able to replace many of the items that I have, they are unique.

Or, being injured in such a fire... you can't just make burn scars disappear.

yes, but that is true if you rent or own a home, sadly most people don't know about renters insurance, so along with the potential serious losses you will have a hard time replacing that which could be replaced...that was my point.

I don't mind the big displays off NY harbor, it's always a beautiful show, but I'd rather the noisemakers not be lit around the neighborhood. Always makes me nervous of a fire starting. My dog is not desensitized to it because we didn't have firework noise where I lived back in Los Angeles - he's only been hearing it since we moved back and he's never gotten used to it.

He's mostly deaf now so it doesn't matter much anymore but a few years ago I'd give him a mellow pill and crate him until it was over. Poor dog would go bonkers.
